Busy week here in Fulford Harbour. A company was contracted by Transport Canada under their derelict boats program to haul out a bunch of junk. The local newspaper says the contract was worth just shy of $20k but it seems like an awful lot of work for that amount of money.

The crane and barge have been tied up at the Fulford government dock and the local wharf, when not working in the harbour. People love seeing this stuff! They’ve hauled out a lot of boats!

That's the same company that worked on the bridge project.

At least 5 derelict boats on the Gorge near Selkirk Trestle now, some with their own floating platforms with junk on them. Looking back over this thread, at least 4 of them have been there for a while (years?)....same boats, same positions.

When I biked by on the trestle, the smaller boat in the foreground had a gas generator running on the float, and two hours later when I came back it was still going.

The court decision last year that gave the go ahead to remove derelict boats - - still valid? Is this just a lack of will on the part of COV, or some other impediment to removing liveaboard/derelict boats?

Sounds like a job for the CoV's poet laureate team.

On top of the Poet Laureate Team, I think the COV might do well to send in the Mural and Sidewalk Art Team to spruce those boats up a bit with some paint ... maybe some abstract art.

Presumably, the thought at the COV is that these are essentially "poor people", and therefore the basic rules of civilized society don't apply to them ... at least while the Ben and Lisa show is still a thing.

Apparently that generator (or generators) is causing a lot of frustration among individuals who live within earshot.

OK so "i should have read the tide charts and not anchored in shallow water"?

Duh!

A few ramshackle boats mooring in the Gorge continue to be a thorn in the side of the City of Victoria.

Four boats, a couple surrounded by rickety wharfs, continue to anchor in defiance of a court order.

That’s certainly not a boat in the traditional sense in that photo. It’s like a floating platform that just keeps growing.

It was some time back in 2018 that the B.C. Supreme Court found that the COV was obliged to give the boaters 60 days to remove their boats from the Gorge Waterway.

It would likely have to be demonstrated that the boats in place today are the same boats that were in place when the order was dropped by the B.C.S.C.

But more importantly, the COV obviously has no intention of enforcing the court order, making the entire matter somewhat resolved in the eyes of the boaters ... they stay put because they want to, and because they know nothing at all is being done in terms of enforcement of the court order.

The optics that these are "boaters" who are in "boats" is as misplaced now as it was when the court order was dropped ... these are floating squats, having nothing at all to do with "boating".

That picture on the front page of the paper is like a floating tent city with all the misc. debris. And a person in a wheelchair on board? That can't be very safe.

Just before the tow truck comes they need to pull anchor on a flood tide and drift towards the “Great Triangle” a mere few meters west of their current position. (pun intended)

This imaginary vector of confusion is the only location where 3 of the 4 core municipalities meet in the middle of the “Victoria Arm” (again with the pun thing)

Positioned properly with the correct amount of anchor length, the captain should be able to traverse all 3 municipal borders with ease depending on the winds and the tides.

Morning tea in Victoria, lunch in Esquimalt , Saanich for supper has a ring to it. (again....

This chaotic maneuver should drive a judge to drink. ( sorry...

Looking at that photo I have to wonder if it's the wheelchair bound man who panhandles downtown. Some of you may have seen him. He pushes himself backwards with his feet.

Concerns about the boats include potential environmental impact, particularly on sensitive eel-grass habitat.

"Won't somebody please think of the eel-grass!?"
