OK so it's not The Gorge/Brentwood/Oak Bay/Cad Bay, but it's in the neighbourhood! Derelict vessels in Pender Harbour and Sooke are set to be removed following a funding commitment by the Feds to Salish Sea Industrial Services, a Victoria-based FN company. They're also part of the Ralmax Group of Companies (ex. Point Hope, Trio, etc.)

This company did a fabulous job around salt spring this year, I think I posted a couple photos at the time.

The derelict boats on this side of the water in the center of the picture were offloaded from the barge in the last day or so. I don't know where they came from though they might be due to the recent government contract. Good to see some work is being done.

This hull was floated and brought from up the Gorge. I think it may have been on of the boats that burned a long time ago.

Victoria & Saanich Police Officers Team Up To Rescue Man From Sinking Boat In Gorge Waterway

Victoria, BC – A man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after VicPD and Saanich Police Department officers rescued him after his boat sunk in the Gorge Waterway this morning.

Just after 4:35 a.m. this morning, both Saanich Police Department and Victoria Police Department officers, including VicPD Patrol and K9 officers, responded to a report of a boat sinking in the Gorge Waterway near the west side of Tillicum bridge. When officers arrived they discovered the boat had capsized, and a man, who lived aboard the boat with his dog, clinging to the side. The officers threw a line to the man.

As the current moved the boat close to a nearby ladder exit, officers encouraged the man to swim for the ladder and pulled him towards shore using the line. The VicPD K9 officer then entered the ladder area, shielding the man with his own body to assist in the man’s safe exit, while the boat was swept away.

Once out of the water, officers warmed the man with their jackets until BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics arrived, treated the man and transported him to hospital. Saanich Police officers were able to rescue the man’s dog safely.

Victoria & Saanich Police Officers Team Up To Rescue Man From Sinking Boat In Gorge Waterway

and the media re-write:

A man and his dog were rescued from their sinking houseboat on the Gorge Waterway Friday morning.

The Saanich and Victoria police departments joined forces in the early hours of Dec. 27 after reports came in about a sinking boat near the west side of the Tillicum bridge.

Officers from both jurisdictions responded just after 4:30 a.m. and saw that the boat had capsized and the man and his dog were clinging to the side.

Police threw a line to the man as the current pushed the boat closer to a nearby ladder. The man was told to try swimming to the ladder and officers assisted by towing him towards the shore.

A VicPD K9 officer then climbed down the ladder to meet the man and shielded him with his body so that the boat wouldn’t hit the man while he got out of the water.

After the man was out of the water, officers warmed him up with their coats while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. The man was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Saanich officers were also able to safely rescue the man’s dog.

The boat that the man and his dog were living on was swept away and no updates have been provided by police on its status.

except the media re-write says the dog was also clinging to the side of the boat.  which i find hard to believe.  every time i've crashed my ships my dogs have dutifully "gone down with the ship" as required by maritime law.  :rtfm:

canadian press/tc re-write:

Members of the Victoria and Saanich police departments combined forces on Friday morning to rescue a man when his boat sank in the Gorge Waterway.

Police say officers responded to reports of the sinking near the Tillicum Bridge at around 4:30 a.m.

The boat had already capsized when police arrived and officers spotted the man who lived aboard and his dog clinging to the side of the vessel.

Police say as the current was moving the boat, a K9 officer helped the man up a ladder to safety.

The man was treated at the scene and then transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Saanich officers were also able to safely rescue the man's dog.

this version also has the dog clinging.  but does not indicate the dog normally lived onboard. if we believe this account the dog might have just been visiting.  all accounts seem to give a strange weight to the fact it was a k9 officer involved.  who cares?  or is it more significant that the k9 guy comes to rescue a man - and his dog?

ctv weighs in on the press release:

Officers from both the Victoria and Saanich police departments rescued a man and his dog from a sinking boat in the Gorge Waterway early Friday morning.

The dramatic rescue began just after 4:35 a.m. this morning when police received reports of a sinking boat near the west side of Tillicum Bridge.

Officers from VicPD, the Saanich police department and a police dog responded to the call. When they arrived, the officers found that the boat had completely capsized and that a man and his dog were clinging to the side of the vessel.

Police then threw the man a line from shore for him to grab onto. As the man grabbed the line, VicPD says the current pushed the boat close to a nearby shore ladder exit. Officers then encouraged the man to swim for the ladder as they simultaneously pulled him towards dry land using the line.

As the man neared the ladder, one officer entered the Gorge Waterway to protect the man from being pushed by the current and assisted him out of the water. Officers were also able to rescue the man's dog from the water unharmed.

Once the man was out of the water, officers kept him warm until paramedics arrived. He was then treated on-site before being transported to hospital.

Police say the man was living on the boat before it capsized.

this one also has the dog clinging to the boat.  it's the first one to indicate a police dog responded:

Saanich police department and a police dog responded

Officers from VicPD, the Saanich police department and a police dog responded to the call.

does the dog have a patrol car?  or does he/she have to run there after getting the alert?

same guy gets rescued again.

Wood said that he’s never experienced two marine rescues in one day, but pointed out that multiple rescues can sometimes be required. He commended all the emergency crews for their quick work during both rescues.

I don’t know people sometimes get a bit desperate when they are about to lose their boat in this case apparently home then things start going even further downhill. Slow and steady wins the race(most of the time).

Emergency crews rescue Saanich man from Portage Inlet for a third time

First rescue came after the man’s houseboat sank in the Gorge Waterway on Dec. 27

https://www.vicnews....r-a-third-time/

Wood said that he’s never experienced two marine rescues in one day, but pointed out that multiple rescues can sometimes be required.

On Jan. 3, Barry was once again spotted in the water, this time he was heading to his floating dock on the View Royal side of the inlet. West Shore RCMP received a report at about 9:30 a.m. and by the time officers arrived, the View Royal Fire Rescue and paramedics were already working to get Barry out of the water, noted Const. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer.

It was the third time Barry was rescued from the water in one week. He was taken to the hospital again and residents looked after his dog.

__________________

In just four days, more than $3,255 was raised to help him pay for accommodation as Welch wrote that his boat is “unsalvageable.”

so was he in the water swimming or what?  he has a "floating dock"?  is that his boat?  he's likely to end up dead by next week if this cycle continues.

One of the things that worries me a lot about the live aboard boats is what are they doing with their waste water?    I have no faith the human (and dog?) waste is being dealt with properly.

"properly"?  what are all the fish and seals and whales and birds and insects doing with their waste in the harbour/gorge?  it's harmless immediately after it disperses.  dilution is the key to stopping pollution.

most canadian cities clean some stuff out of their sewage pipes then disperse it into rivers.  the same rivers they draw drinking water from.  it's all good.
