One would hope that by introducing more active uses to the Square it will continue to be reclaimed as an attractive public space. That was the goal with those temporary whale sculptures...

Is there any evidence this has been successful?

Depends on where you draw the line at success. I know of some anecdotal accounts that the sculptures are being used as intended (they are climbable and have soft-surface fall zones around them), so they have been successful at drawing desired users (in this case, adults with small children) into the space.

Has this helped reduce or remove undesirable uses from the Square? Probably not.

All day, every day, year 'round ... Centennial Square is an wasteland of endlessly brewing trouble, 24/7.

Opening up CS to/from Douglas Street might help, but I bet no one would accept the loss of the mammoth tree that blocks the view.

No need to get rid of the tree, just limb it up like the one at Pandora and Vancouver

A Garry Oak would be a nice replacement for the current evergreen.

The tree is not even that old. Cut it down and give to a charity to raise money with. The square will be better without it.

It won't be long before the City no longer decorates it for Christmas. That's about the only time it serves any purpose.

Why can't we take some of the 'roads are for people' mentality that threatens Government Street and apply it to CS - 'people places are for people and should be clean and safe'

Centennial Square isn't unsafe. It's just a little desperate.

Public feedback on CS revitalization has now reached the next phase.

...One year after a public survey was launched, city staff are presenting council with the resulting priorities after it launched its phase 1 (analysis) and phase 2 (design concepts) portions. After engaging with more than 1,400 individuals through online surveys, in-person engagement and an Ideas Jam, a clearer picture has been formed. The top themes identified by community members included making the square more welcoming for families, installing more year-round programming, having more vendors and businesses around the square, and addressing safety concerns at night, especially lighting. Feedback also included requests for a restful, shady terrace with a play zone – possibly including movable furniture, playable seating and a water feature – and room for three commercial kiosks around the outer edges...

I am not sure what should replace it, but removing that oversized sequoia and opening up CS to Douglas Street would definitely be an improvement.

It may ultimately be felled, but that giant sequoia tree serves a useful purpose every minute of every day. Just imagine the living breathing structure that absorbs carbon dioxide and exudes oxygen. It's also beautiful. It provides shade for people on the ground, and shelter for other creatures in its boughs. It would be a big loss if the decision is made to take it down.

While it serves a purpose it is not in the right location to make Centennial Square a welcoming and safe place. I'd suggest replacing it with a smaller deciduous tree set considerably further back from Douglas Street.

You're right that it's not in the best location. That's what hurts about it. There is a reasonable case to be made for its removal, even with its high value.

That tree could easily be developed into a 18 story tower of affordable housing!

Fyi Counc Dubow tweeted that he doesn't support cutting the sequoia down and posted a photo of it with full festive lighting. Counc Isitt's twitter has gone back to super-secret in-camera mode, so I'm not sure if he is saying anything.

Is councillor Isitt’s twitter private/public switch loose, or something? He needs to get that fixed.

Know it all.
