I dunno, if we need new hotels, does that mean that Air bnb is having no impact?  I wonder why he says "limited service" hotels.

How many of those are in the past 5 yrs? it does seem we are in a bit of a hiatus when in comes to new hotels. Nothing on the horizon either other than Roundhouse - who knows when that comes?

Don't we need a hotel in Esquimalt?  What we got there?

I guess the Comfort Inn at Admirals and Craigflower is in Esquimalt.

How in the world can you even begin to suggest we've had a "dry spell?" I'd say we've had a pretty darned good run well within the last 15 years.

It hasn't exactly been a dry spell, but there hasn't really been the construction of a large urban hotel like you would see in burnaby or richmond. I could see how something like this could be on the way for saanich, in particular uptown.

I've always thought McKenzie/Shelbourne would make sense.

OK, I'm thinking today that Saanich could use a hotel or two out towards University Heights, don't ya think? Or how about one where McMorran's is/was? Or one on the top of Mt. Tolmie. That reminds me I wonder what happened to Asfar's Moutaintop B&B or whatever he called up top there.

Isn't there enough people visiting the University to make one near there worthwhile?

How about building one up on top of the upper parking lot of McKenzie Mall, covering 2/3 of that area, and most with rooms facing Garnet, right here?

^Ya, that could be Tuscany Village.

Amyway, this was my idea.

Maybe back in 2010 that location made the most sense, but today I think uptown is a more likely location.

The new hotels in Colwood, Sooke and Sidney are that scale.

I think we've done pretty good. And we're not even a business travel market and that's what attracts hotel investment.

^ The Hotel Rialto was also significantly upgraded from an East Van slum to a nice hotel.

Right.

And there were quite a lot of upgrades undertaken to Asfar's properties since he split. Hotel Zed was started up, too, and Executive House was renovated into a DoubleTree. Victoria Plaza shut down, but I don't think many tourists clamored for that place.

That "dry spell" statement is sounding pretty bizarre.

does saanich really only have 5 hotels?

hojo

red lion

seaview suites (mt. doug - extended stay)

cherry tree

accent inn

and two of those aren't even really in the saanichiest areas red lion and accent.

uvic should sell their velox property off for a hotel development.  or where the canadian tire was.  what's happening with that property?  i guess the auto garage is still going.  with the garage gone and some creative landscaping that area would be ok for a hotel.

Elk Lake Inn and Suites Victoria is heading for a major upgrading and expansion starting next week.

The Royal Oak hotel will become a Holiday Inn Express, part of the IHG family of hotels, said Bradley Martin, a director of the company that owns the property.

Martin said both Saanich and Victoria are in “desperate need” of new hotel rooms because they’ve lost so many over the last 10 to 15 years.

Once work is completed, the hotel will have 138 rooms, up from the current 87. The hotel will continue to operate during the renovation.

The two-stage plan will begin with renovation of the 2001 section of the building, facing 4670 Elk Lake Dr., with its 71 rooms and common areas. Improvements will include new carpeting and furnishings.

The Holiday Inn is among at least five new hotels or expansions in the pipeline, bringing new rooms and jobs to the region, along with investment of tens of millions of dollars.
