British Columbia's provincial health officer says none of the Canadians who were on a ship struck by an outbreak of deadly hantavirus had known direct contact with anyone who was infected.

But Dr. Bonnie Henry said it was impossible to be completely sure, and four people from the ship who were flown to Victoria on Sunday were isolating on Vancouver Island for a minimum of 21 days.

She said all were well and had no symptoms, which was "reassuring but … we are in a very critical phase of the incubation period.”

“They were tired, I would say exhausted, but very relieved and grateful,” to be back in Canada, she told a news briefing in Victoria.

She said the four people are a couple in their 70s from the Yukon, a person in their 70s from Vancouver Island, and a person from B.C. in their 50s who lives abroad.

We brought four of these contagious lepers to Victoria even though only one lives here. Clearly it’s putting us all in danger.

Are they isolating at the new hotel next to the runway? Why send them here?

Bonnie Henry said "from Vancouver Island" as opposed to "from Victoria" - which very likely means that none of them are from Victoria, but somehow it's been determined that they'd best stay somewhere here in Victoria, thus enabling the potential risk (however small they might declare it to be) of infecting locals with a plague that originated on the other side of the planet.

It’s overblown all the coverage.

Indeed, the media goes out of their way to explain that it is not a pandemic, nobody is at risk but they spend 5 minutes of national news time trying to scare you with it. I just fast forward through all that nonsense.

The CBC does have a habit of re-upping its previous headlines on a particular topic, but right now the top 8 headlines on their website are about the hantivirus. .

Somebody is lying with statistics. If the average is 345, and they give you one high value of 1861… well, if there were only 2 values, the low value required to get an average of 345 is -1171.
How about don’t report the obviously extreme outlier of 1861… or give us a more meaningful explanation instead. eg “80% of patients are placed within x days”

How is it lying? Nowhere does it say there are only 2 patients.

It paints a narrative by telling us only the longest outlier.
Why not report objectively and tell us the shortest outlier too ?

Because that wouldn’t serve whatever agenda is behind this.
