Canada has over 500 types of bees and some of them are declining fast. Most types do not sting people.
Habitat loss is a large part of the reason for them being in trouble.
Habitat is flowers, etc and the etc is where you can really help. Everyone knows about the little mason bee houses but what of all the other types?
They need places to lay their eggs and to shelter from rain and wind and overnight.
This year I started making cob bee blocks. Then I decided to stick in plant stems too.
Several types of solitary bees have been using them. Some live in the holes in the cob, and some live in the hollow plant stems. some prefer to drill into the plant pith and make their own little rooms. I used all sorts of plant stems (dill, raspberry canes, grape vines, weed stems, etc and all sorts of size hole in the cob. (Because we do not know what the local bees really want). Anyway, even if it is just a bundle of weed stems, or raspberry canes, how about making some bee habitat today? You might just help save a species from extinction!
You can see the bee idea at

It has had thousands of views and people are interested as far away as Egypt. How about some interest and action right here in Victoria?
