And what about the VanCity branches in greater Victoria...that's really confusing.

Plus, there's a Bombay Co. opening in Westshore Town Ctr...OH NO!!!

Hillside Printers on Nanaimo Street has a new neighbour...you guessed it...

Cedar Hill Auto.

Cedar Hill Auto has been in that location for a couple of years now. This was mentioned in the second post of this thread already. No soup for you.

This problem stems from when you go to the province to set up your small business. They REQUIRE you to stick some kind of descriptor in front of your actual business name. For instance, you can't be just THE BARBERSHOP. They make you put either "Frank's Barbershop" or "Douglas St Barbershop". At least it was this way when we registered our business about 15 years ago. We made several tries, not wanting to have that kind of descriptor because we sell internationally from our web site. For some odd reason, they finally excepted "BBS The Barbershop", BBS being short form for Barbershop (not our real name of course). We never use our official name except for official things like bank accounts and PST registration so we still go the THE BARBERSHOP.

Many years ago, we were at a beach party down on Ocean Blvd in Colwood. The party was crashed by a bunch of rowdies from Esquimalt. Arguments ensued, threats were exchanged and we suggested that they should stay in their own neighbourhood. One of them responded:

“You’re on our turf, losers! This is the Esquimalt Lagoon!”

I hope you whipped out your pocket map and set them straight.

I wanted to clarify that this only happens to businesses that the province feels have too generic a name - such as Barbershop, Printers, Winery, Auto, Bicycles. We didn't feel our business had a generic name without the descriptor - there are only a handful of businesses in the US that have the same name as us and none in Canada. We are a very small industry. So we were kind of surprised and incredibly frustrated they insist we stick a descriptor in front of business name. Luckily we don't have to use it except for banks and the province.

If you need a post-lockdown haircut, try the Cook Street Barbershop, located of course, in the Jukebox building on View Street.
