Yes, I don't mean to imply buyers are preying on weak businesses. Realtors are approaching successful businesses with eye-popping offers.

There is no doubt that some buyers just want the ticket and don't care a rat about whether the business is successful, but most would like to see a return on their investment. The problem for many is that they are buying small local businesses that were owner operated and lack a true management team. When the seller leaves the business often fails because the buyer doesn't have the support to continue on.

I don't blame the sellers. The retail economy has been weak in Victoria for many years and if someone comes along with a cheque and a ticket out then most will take it.

Don't the original owners stay on in many cases, in management?

Not that I've seen. There might be a transition period but after that the new owners assume full operational control. In most of these businesses the only wages they can afford are minimum wages.

In the case of the kitchen cabinet manufacturer that I am familiar with, the answer was only during a transition period.

a clothing store is opening in the Fort street location recently vacated by Special Teas. it seems that the right location and the right rents attract tenants.

Apologies if this has already been noted and I missed it, but Buddies Toys has left its Estevan location for 1831 Oak Bay Avenue.

31 Erie Street in James Bay is currently being retrofit to accommodate Imagine Studio Cafe.

Previously this was the location of Custom Safety Ltd. and prior to that Victoria Marine Electric.

Just next door, Finest at Sea has positioned its new food cart in front of their building. I gather the older, larger food cart will travel around to various events. With the coffee shop, that should give the neighbourhood a lift.

Don't be so sure.

I'm told a bakery/cafe is going in to Era.

At the rate they are going, it'll be Christmas.

Marigold Nurseries is closing permanently at the end of the year.

NO!!! That is my absolute fav place for annuals. It was such a riot of colour and modestly priced, you couldn't help getting out of there with much more than you planned on getting.

Does not look like it.  Map shows there is no ALR land east of Pat Bay Hwy., from Mt. Newton north, save for a tiny bit much higher than Marigold.

I'm going to assume they'll be redeveloping the land.

Businesses like Marigold started suffering when every gvocery store, even pharmacies starred stocking garden plants.

Who remembers Gord's Post of the Week on VV? A legacy of Holden West.

The way the deer population is munching through peoples gardens, I'm not surprised.

Do we know there's an internet cafe coming to the 500-block of Yates beside Ferris'? Because there is.

People still use those things?
