I never said things are fine. I think they are the worst they've ever been. But it's no reason to boycott merchants that need your business.

I don’t think anyone is boycotting business. but they are to some extent skipping downtown and thus shopping elsewhere often.

Of coarse council does not care if businesses fold; they are not trying to make it economically successful. Actually, having the downtown fail will draw more low income (or no income)  people to the core and that is their voter base.

Random citizen stabbed after asking a man to stop urinating in public. From Stirling:

“A man who was stabbed in downtown Victoria Saturday night tells CTV News Vancouver Island the incident occurred because he told his alleged assailant to stop urinating in a trash can near city hall.”

This was at centennial square.

Know it all.

Which shows that camping has no impact on the safety of the square.

After months of controversy involving its board and election activity, Mountain Equipment Co-op says the company is going to be sold. It's going to be acquired by Kingswood Capital Management through the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.

It hasn't been run as a cooperative in quite some time.

What was the attraction to this store? We’ve been members for years, but always found better pricing elsewhere, especially on bigger ticket items.

like many co-ops there was some sense of belonging and camaraderie.

like many co-ops the system did not work.

people prefer "low prices" to "fair wages" often.

Folks always prefer "fair wages" when it is their wage at stake.

Not sure if this has been noted yet, but the ground floor of the former Russell Books home has been leased. Looks like they’re doing some light renos inside.

Matt.

Did you get money back each year on purchases like the Co-Op gas stations?

Or did you never make purchases?

Good to hear.

Good to hear.

It actually felt busy downtown today - maybe more people returning to work downtown with the kids back in school - for however long it lasts this time.

The View Street parkade had 370 available spaces at 8 a.m. compared to the August norm of 420 at the same time.. not sure what it gets down to.

Can't say if Kingswood Capital Management is planing this, but commonly capital management will make the newly purchased company take out a loan to repay the full purchase price, then cut cut cut.  Under than model, there is no investment made ongoing either.  If it stays afloat, it is a "free" purchase and can be flipped to the next Capital Management firm to try the same method again.  No risk even if the company folds.

The agreements will likely not survive the bankruptcy.

No, no money back. I am a member of two gas co ops, don’t mind those cheque’s one bit!

I always found MEC good for bike clothes, ok for things like sunglasses and smaller items, and often overpriced on larger ticket items like jackets and camping gear. Robinson’s has seen a fair of business from us the last bunch of years. Better prices. Awesome service.

BC Labour Relations Code, Part 3, Division 3:

1) If a business or a part of it is sold, leased, transferred or otherwise disposed of, the purchaser, lessee or transferee is bound by all proceedings under this Code before the date of the disposition and the proceedings must continue as if no change had occurred.

(2) If a collective agreement is in force, it continues to bind the purchaser, lessee or transferee to the same extent as if it had been signed by the purchaser, lessee or transferee, as the case may be.
