Are you talking about Brownie's Fried Chicken? There were several of those. There was one across from Jubilee Hospital on Fort.

How about Chicken on the Run? On Craigflower at the bend coming down from Catherine, and beside Banfield (?) Park.

What ever happened to Muffin Break?

I think their days were numbered when people began realizing the fat and calorie content of an average muffin were equal to a regular burger and fries.

I think the Shelbourne place was Tastee Freeze. I do remember it down at the southern end. Ve7ao, if your friend can find an old photo and post it here that would be cool. This thread is in desperate need of some images.

Yes, there were several Brownie's Fried Chicken outlets around the region. There was one in Esquimalt Road just past the rec centre in that tiny strip mall.

Paul's Crown House was an extremely cool restaurant. It's now been remodelled to death and is now the VanCity building just before Mayfair. The architecture was incredible--early 60s, indoor/outdoor rock garden, very modern and hip. You half expected Sammy, Frank and the rest of the Rat Pack to come swingin' in. It was more upscale than the cafe in Paul's Motor Inn but by looking at the cafe you can still get a sense of the style of the Crown House. In it's original condition it would have made a great retro martini bar!

Didn't they build the Van City log cabin from scratch? I thought they tore down the old Paul's/casino?

There were lousy little Mac's stores here and there. Does that count as Food and Dining? There was one on Cedar Hill just south of North Dairy.

Ah, you're probably right about VanCity being a new building. The giant sign is still there, right? They don't dare get rid of that because it was built before the sign bylaw and is therefore grandfathered in.

When they built Van-City they used some of the original construction, it was stripped down to the framing and added onto. The original Paul's sign is still there.

How about the Chuckie Cheese rip off that was at Hillside and Quadra? Anyone remember the name?

Hollyrood House......i did the music for a bunch of wedding receptions there, best memory is being set up in a tiny little room, watching the wedding cake tip over like a giant fir in a clear-cut. then there was the time in the main hall, when i was backstage, wondering why it was so quiet.....turned out they were waiting for me to play "here comes the bride" on the sound system....but i hadn't been told that was part of the package. hell, i didn't even have the tape with me! i wonder whatever happened to those couples from years ago.....regardless, it was a coolly historic place, too bad it came down.

The Hillside/Quadra place was mentioned a few month ago but I can't remember the name.

For those who can't picture Holyrood House, the interior was a cross between the Empress ballroom and your elementary school gymnasium.

Harbour Cones, on Gordon & Courtney: I went by today, and it's an AM2PM convenience store. No idea how long it's been gone, but I used to go there far too often...

When I was a kid we used to meet my dad for lunch at Ivanhoe's ... it was awhile ago but I seem to remember the sandwiches being good and having cool medieval names. I think the restaurant's name is still painted on the side of the building?

Ha! Zing!

I remember a cafe part of the Princess Mary; a square counter possibly with booths along the perimeter--quite small. This would have been before the extension was built.

Yes, the remnants of the Ivanhoe's sign can still be seen--I believe it's the building the ice cream cone store is in on Gov't St.

In the late 70s it seemed that every restaurant or club had some kind of dark, window-less underground cave theme--knights of old (Ivanhoes, Olde England Inn etc.); rich, meaty ethnic German or Hungarian food with dimly-lit, rock-walled grottoes. Industrial themes were popular (The Old Forge, Spaghetti Foundry).

What a great thread!

Do any of you remember Grant's Soda Fountain at the corner of Shelbourne and Hillside? Across from Al's Esso, before Al moved to Tolmie.

Would that have been in the old Pharmasave building? It was a little shack not unlike the old Dairy Queen, if I remember correctly.

No I don't this so. Grants was in a single level group of about 3 or 4 shops on the east side of Shelbourne. Very popular with the Students from Lansdowne Junior High School.

If I remember correctly, there was a magazine shop next door, or they sold magazines at Grants.

I think the Pharmasave was on the west side of Shelobourne in a white stucco building. Grants was wood.

I remember a drug store on the southwest corner that pre-dates the present structure. I don't recall a soda fountain.

Anyone remember The Jolly Friar near the back of the Bay... a trailer on a vacant lot?
