Also what happens when esquimalt drops the name esquiamlt in an effort to rebrand the muni and becomes “bayside” or “Oceanside” Or somesuch
That’s no longer a possibility. You can’t be removing Native nanes. You must always be adding more.

Here is a Q. Why does the new bridge open the same way the old one does? Hinged on the east.

Would it have made a difference to be "hinged" on the west?

I'm not sure, I'm just asking. I'm also the guy that thinks a 3-car-lane bridge is just odd. How many of those do we have around here? Why not 2 or 4 like 98%* of lift bridges are? We just built it with 3 since that's what was built there in 1924.

The giant concrete block in the harbor that supports the "hinge" mechanics would have had to be on the other side, which would have blocked otherwise open waterway. The waterway is already somewhat blocked on the east side of the bridge because of the docks behind Northern Junk. It seems like there would be a net loss of usable waterway if the hinge was on the other side.
I'm sure there are actual engineering related reasons though. Wind strength from whatever direction. Or maybe it's more of like...when the bridge goes up, it's kinda like the CoV sticking up the middle finger towards Esquimalt.

In the early days the bridge operator on the east / hinge side had a better view of boats approaching from the entrance of the harbour.
It also enabled the operator to raise the bridge to keep the sailors from the naval base out of Victoria.
