From the piece:
The released records show Huggett and another engineer misled public officials about the circumstances that led to the need for the premature repair. In turn, those public officials, including Mayor Lisa Helps, misled the public.

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

^ I seem to recall that when David first published on the issue both Helps and Huggett tried to discredit him as being an alarmist without a full understanding of the issues.

You just described Helps’ modus operandi... in her mind she knows more than anyone on anything, and takes zero input from anyone... except other activists like her who also thinknthey know more than anyone about everything ... IMHO

Paving Time...

Making all the connections on the west side.  My concern is the angled bike path onto the bridge approach.  It's downhill from the top of the existing E&N trail and you KNOW some goof is going to zoom down this thing at speed and attempt to merge into the bike lane without crashing or swerving into on coming traffic.  We'll see.

Unless significant additions are planned post-paving, what an exceptionally uninspired space the west side plaza promises to be.

Nothing like another lifeless plaza to add to the collection. It will link up nicely to the other lifeless plaza in front of the Delta.

Other cities would have added a small one story restaurant or two. Look at how lively Fol Epi is without having anywhere near the visibility or view.

My vote is for the "Blue Bridge Pub" with a section of the old bridge's superstructure as the bar.

But this is part of the Harbourfront Lifeless Plaza network and a “green” space. Council wants to add more lifeless plazas and green spaces (the bridge; Ship Point) so that they can take them away elsewhere (Central Park).

...this is part of the Harbourfront Lifeless Plaza network...

With some promotion I think this moniker could really catch on.

The lack of path lighting on the west side is another deficiency.

It would be a perfect spot for something like that, for sure. Even just a small cafe for cold stuff in the summer and hot stuff in the winter. It should be automatic. Not just because it would be good on its own but also because it would diminish some of that isolating distance between other things. From Spinnakers to the new marina to the water taxi stop to the rocky point to the hotel to this spot to Northern Junk... each node would contribute to the other.

A lot of people won't even bother making that walk if things are too far apart.

Progress on the east side...

I included a link to the rendering from the JSB website.  The "as built" looks to be mainly pavers, including on the path up to Wharf St.  The stairs etc. to the right would be part of the Johnson Street Gateway project.

Lotsa' great camping spots in that render!

I shall be down there with my truck and camper as soon as construction is complete for a few days of waterfront camping on that bit of grass they're promising.

There's a Provincial fire ban on, but really, laws are only suggestions in B.C. ... especially in Victoria - so I anticipate getting a massive evening campfire going as well ... you're all welcome to join me, although my cooler only holds 15 beer, so I'll post here when I run out, after which you'll have to bring your own.

See you there!

I believe the City has announced that Monday, August 20 will be the date for the opening of the south side pedestrian walkway.

Don't be so sure.

That will be a bit of a yawn, as it's not as if you haven't been able to walk across the new bridge.

I don't think so Bingo. I believe that people will look at the pedestrian walkway as a very attractive feature. It will draw the tourists for sure, and will be a viewpoint that will be hard to beat. Plus no need to dodge bikes.

Plus it will be the first time we will be able to walk through the "wheels" of the new bridge ... a feature that probably added at least $10 million to the final cost in engineering, steel refabrication, etc.

Absolutely, I'd guess 90% of our trips downtown are south of Johnson St.  Given the glacial pace of lights around the Janion Plaza, this new route will save us hours in transit time.

Underside Illumination...

It's a treat that only those who are on the west side can see (but I'll share) - the illuminated underside of the bridge when raised.  It used to not be so dramatic.  Initially they just had a row of blue spotlights shinning up from the bottom of the bridge.  Those only illuminated the bottom of the underside as can be seen in the first pic.  More recently the entire underside is illuminated by what I suspect are spotlights shinning up from the end of the west approach span.  Also, the shadows towards the top indicate illumination from a low angle.   I'm pretty convinced that's where they're located since the recent work on the west plaza and southern ped walkway left those spotlights off, as well as the west approach MUD lighting.  I let Ryan at the City know and the lights were back on the next business day.
