But where is the design for the yet to be finished north side fendering, or does that go away as well.?

But Project Manager Jonathan Huggett told CFAX 1070's Mark Brennae the fendering may not be installed at all:

Huggett: " We've talked in the past about fendering. You know fendering is one of those issues, does it need to be done? You've got, you know, if it's a lot of money, is it money well-spent? Those kinds of issues, we're still wrestling with that."

Brennae:  " So is there a chance that there'll be no fendering put on this?"

Huggett: "That's certainly one option out there."

A letter from Seaspan Marine to the city's engineering department -- leaked last year -- revealed the company has serious concerns over things like the bridge design and other factors increasing the risk of collisions for barges.

Huggett says the city has to balance risk vs. expenditure, and is looking at various options.  However he notes the vessels are skippered by experienced mariners, there have been no head-on strikes involving the bridge in the past, and with the old bridge's concrete supports staying in place those will provide collision-protection.

Now there's an idea! Who needs a rear bumper on a car, anyway. The front bumper provides collision-protection.

Has Huggett already forgotten about the barges that ran ashore along the coast of this very city a couple of years ago? Experienced skippers or not, Mother Nature has a way of mucking up the best laid plans. This is all so amateur hour, isn't it?

I am sure that Huggett is only saying what he is told to.

The old piers provide some collision protection from the south side only.

A fully loaded barge of scrapped cars will arrive from the unprotected north side of the bridge.

The experts are avoiding the north side fendering topic because the best protection would be pilings down through the underwater Telus cable.

From VicPD:

🔺 Traffic Disruptions Expected Monday Afternoon During Anticipated Protest On Johnson Street Bridge 🔺

Victoria, BC – Traffic disruptions are expected to take place during an anticipated protest on the Johnson Street Bridge at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018.

Patrol, Operational Planning, Community Engagement and Community Services Division Officers and staff are all working with the group planning the protest to help minimize the impact to those making their way home during the evening commute that day. The right to safe, peaceful and lawful protest is protected by law. However, officers have reminded participants that blocking a highway as part of a protest is unlawful.

The protest group has notified us that they plan to assemble in Centennial Square and then begin a brief march west down Pandora Avenue to the Johnson Street Bridge. Upon arriving on the Johnson Street Bridge, they plan to occupy it for a short period of time – roughly equivalent to one complete opening and closing cycle. While our officers will not be closing the Bridge to facilitate the protestors’ actions, they will be required to ensure the safety of participants and the public should the anticipated event occur.

Our officers are working with the City of Victoria, BC Transit and other partners to ensure the public is well-informed in advance of any potential disruptions due to the protest actions.

Ah. Thank you. So the protest is being organized by Extinction Rebellion Vancouver Island, a climate-action group. They are planning a sit-in on the bridge tomorrow.

it'll seem like a liveable climate future for vic west residents that get home before 5:30.  not for those later.

I’m hearing this might actually be a protest against the Johnson family for which the bridge is named.

The Johnson family is singlehandedly responsible for climate change?

I have been saying that it should be the Pandora Avenue bridge for eons since the alignment is now with Pandora. Seems like an easy way to prevent future protests.

I have serious concerns about the evil that Pandora unleashed upon the world when she didn't shut that box in time.

Scratch that. Apparently it's not about the name at all. Maybe in an hour or two it'll be about the name once again?

I think there are folks trying to have some fun with this after VicPD released their statement completely bereft of details on the protest itself.

Blocking traffic on a bridge is silly and won't gain them any support, but I suppose it is getting to cold to be pitching a tent somewhere.

Too soon?

...143 holidaymakers on their way to attend celebrations of Queen Victoria's birthday crashed through Point Ellice Bridge into the Upper Harbour.[1] 55 men, women, and children were killed in the accident...
