Thou shall not pass...

When they first opened the southern pedestrian walkway that provided access to the observation deck, there was no gate or barrier.  They quickly added a portable steel grate that spanned the width of the walkway and attached it whenever they wanted to block access to the observation deck.  I recall that grate being used to close the deck 24/7 for many days following the skateboarding incident.  We now have version 2.0, a formidable permanent solution that is intended to keep everyone out of the observation deck area after hours.  It also matches the robust security door to the control room / bascule pier in its aesthetics and "shininess".

Could be worse... we could live in a country where they put you on a list and interrogate you for taking pictures of bridges!

Are the lights back on? Can't tell because the City's webcam isn't working.

They're back on tonight.

They're back on tonight.

Word from the City is they had an "electrical issue" that has since been resolved.

Fall / Winter 2018 Update...

Finishing up some odds and ends on the project.

Remember those orange plastic and wood barriers around the crossing guards?  They were there from opening day for over eight months...

Until finally, some time between Nov 12, 2018 and Feb 12, 2019, proper permanent metal barriers were installed.

All the wooden planks on the E&N rail bridge over Harbour Rd. were also replaced during this period.

Permanent fencing at the end of the E&N rail track was also installed as well as an innovative stacked lamp post on top of an existing street light that provides some light to a still poorly lit section of the E&N connecting trail.

Hopefully the city will up its game with the landscaping on this project as it all seems pretty third world at the moment.

So that sprayed hydro-seeding just not doing it for ya?

We've lived with "roughed in" landscaping for a year now, but that's finally changing with the work that's started on the north side of the west approach.

i’m not even sure the city is good at landscape design. look at the harbour upper causeway / sidewalk. it’s the blandest thing south of the milestones stairs. in the most high profile spot.

In such a prominent location, this should be showcase landscaping, but my sense is it will be dull and cheap looking. $100 million+ bridge with $25,000 greenery.  :whyme:

Maybe not everyone wants their tax dollars spent on frivolous shrubs.  If you do nothing nature will grow something there for free.

Update on the bridge project (by yours truly) in the new FOCUS: https://www.focusonv...d-business-r12/

In short, we're still waiting for the public art, and an update on the ($4M+) fendering. Instead of building the fendering, the City appears to be relying on a $112K insurance policy, expiring this November, to protect the bridge from north-side ship collisions. And in one of the three bridge-related lawsuits, the City has filed a counterclaim against designer MMM/WSP for "breach of contract, negligence, duty to warn, and negligent provision of services."

The CoV specializes in frivolous expenditures. I can think of a lot better places to save money than on decent landscaping for the city's most prominent piece of infrastructure.

From what I can tell, fendering wasn’t one of the 180 council priorities so they must be relying on luck.

Clearly, the current lack of free BBQs in CoV parks is a greater liability than fendering the bridge.

Is the next phase letting the weeds and crabgrass grow back on the new topsoil?

Because the only thing tax dollars should be spent on are bike lanes and services for homeless.

Those that work and pay taxes don't deserve pretty things like landscaping, holiday decorations, or military style displays of force like Snowbird shows or fireworks.

I am also pretty fed up with this BS of having to pay for parking on a Sunday so some of all y'alls spawn can have "free" friggin bus pass, yet you grieve wanting a couple of damn bushes?
