Apparently the cost estimates to stack a bunch of surfboards into the shape of an Orca has gone from $250K to between $350K and $450K! https://pub-victoria...ocumentId=41787

I'm sure Victoria Councillor Ben Isitt (Idiot) will be in favour of the budget increase.  This is just WRONG!!!  There should be NO budget for this piece of crap.

Always amused by this attack on Isitt. Have you listened to anything he has said or his initial vote on the bridge?

"Johnson Street Bridge unable to lift due to problem with hydraulics"

Time-Colonist
June 28, 2019

...staff are working with the bridge builder, PCL Constructors Westcoast Ltd., and the designers of the hydraulic lift system to get it running again.

A problem with the hydraulic lift oil system was noticed about 2:30 Thursday afternoon...

The TC could have had a lot more fun with that headline.

As funny as the headline could have been, the not so funny reality is that the bridge has been broken now for more than a day with no eta as to when it will be fixed and minimal info from the city. The city is in litigation with both the bridge consulting firm and the bridge contractors and no doubt soon with firms that have vessels now stuck on either side of the bridge. Any contingency or surplus we had is this year’s budget has already been spent. Lets hope for everyone’s sake that this is resolved soon and properly.

I dunno, the article seems to be pretty clear on what they intend to do?

Right on the cusp of a long weekend. This is causing grief for quite a number of people, in certain.

“We understand there is marine traffic looking to get in and out, and we’re working closely with them on that,” he said. “So within a couple of hours we’ll know what we can do today and over the weekend with regard to a lift. But if we are able to do this it will be a co-ordinated bridge lift at a scheduled time for them.”

He said marine operators and the harbour master had been advised of the problem. He didn’t know if any scheduled lifts had to be cancelled.

From the City's Facebook page: "The Johnson St Bridge lift is back in operation after some maintenance. A bridge lift is scheduled today (Fri) at 6pm to accommodate 6 vessels. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians can expect delays. We are working with marine traffic to complete the work as soon as possible."

The webcam is down.

So does this mean the bridge is operational again? Can anyone see the thing from where they are?

According to CHEK News at 6:00 the bridge is operating in "maintenance mode" over the weekend. It can be lifted, but only at scheduled times.

What does that mean....when the bridge is not in "maintenance mode" it is lifted at random times?

On demand, I would guess.

They did that with the old floating bridge in Kelowna when it was on its last legs.  Normally since Okanagan Lake is a Federally Navigable Waterway any old sailboat that didn't want to drop its mast could force the bridge to lift at any time.  When the lift span was pretty much worn out at the end, they would only attempt lifts once in the morning and once in the evening.

So have they told us what specifically was the problem with the hydraulic system?

Given the controversy over the design of the lifting system, the pending lawsuits, and the numerous articles by David Broadland and others on the matter, I would suspect that the City is going to be tight lipped on this.

You will probably have to read Focus to find out what is really going on as the MSM will only repeat whatever babel they get from City Hall.

I think the problem with the hydraulics is that there are hydraulics.

In that the old bridge consisted of an axle, a counterweight and a couple of 75 HP electric motors.
