Old BC Ferries headquarters undergoes renovation

The old BC Ferries headquarters at 1112 Fort Street in downtown Victoria is undergoing renovations prior to occupancy by new tenants.

“The building upgrade is expected to take four months with occupancy by May,” said Robert Jawl of Jawl Properties.

On the heels of BC Ferries’ move to Jawl Properties’ new Atrium building at 800 Yates Street, Victoria’s largest privately held owner and manager of commercial buildings took the opportunity to upgrade the building’s environmental efficiency, add “tenant lifestyle improvements” and lengthen windows from 30 inches to 6 feet.

This building was one of the first to be built by an out of town project manager. All of the trades were "subbed" out. There was no general contractor per se, as a general contractor usually has a labourer or two keeping things tidy. This project was not.

I am glad to see the Jawls are in control now. These chaps are a class act when it comes to the quality of construction.

A source tells us that the mystery tenant at 1112 Fort could be Elections BC. The current office is 333 Quebec Street right beside the Harbour Towers hotel.

The windows look similar to the Executive House Hotel and the five storey office building up at Quadra and Mckenzie which both have had new windows installed in recent years.

The upper floors still have some tenant improvement work going on before anyone moves in, but the building its self is pretty much done.
