Construction on a long-awaited pedestrian and cycling overpass in Colwood is moving into its final major phase, with the city saying the project remains on schedule for completion this March.

The City of Colwood says work on the Galloping Goose Trail overpass over Sooke Road is now focused on building the approach ramps that will connect trail users to the elevated bridge deck.

The ramps are being constructed with a five per cent grade to ensure the crossing is accessible for cyclists, pedestrians and people using mobility aids.

Once complete, users will be able to cross Sooke Rood without having to cross vehicle traffic lanes, creating a safer connection along the 55-kilometres trail that runs from Victoria to Sooke.

Other upgrades to the Galloping Goose still to come include a separate overpass at Tillicum Road in Saanich, which was announced last June.

That section of the trail sees as many as 3,000 users per day in the summer, and work on the overpass is expected to start this year with completion estimated for summer 2027.

To be technical, Sooke Road begins west of Goldstream; so a few hundred metres west of the overpass.

Know it all.

The province hopes the bridge improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists as well as connectivity and getting more people outside commuting.

This particular intersection that will see the upgrade was listed in ICBC’s data list of the top 10 intersections to see the most crashes in Vancouver Island regions for 2024.

Were Goose users causing the crashes?

“Once complete, the Tillicum Active Transportation Bridge will eliminate one of the last signalized crossings on the Galloping Goose Trail between downtown Victoria and the West Shore, improving safety and reducing travel times for active commuters,” said the province.

The trail improvements also align with B.C.’s South Island Transportation Strategy, making it easier for people to move between communities in the capital region.

The next one should go in over the McKenzie-Borden intersection.
