Well, that was the 31 team owners and the NHLPA that decided not to go.

No, the players wanted to go. https://www.nhlpa.co...games-decision

I don't think so.  If they really wanted to go, they would have negotiated that into the last contract with the league.

I imagine the NHLPA will try for that in the 2020 negotiations. But, yes, the players wanted to go. Insurance costs were too high for the owners to stomach and IOC wanted no part in funding that.

The wheels are really falling off this Canucks season now. For a whole there it seemed like there was light at the end of this tunnel, but now things looks as dark as ever.

The NHL Seattle ticket drive opened 33 minutes ago...their goal is to sell 10,000 season tickets.

Seattle reportedly met their 10,000 ticket goal in 12 minutes, and have currently sold 25,000 tickets (5,000 are club seats). Holy crap!

They ended up selling 33k "ticket commitments" by Friday afternoon and shut down sales.

At this point, Seattle not getting a NHL team would take some sort of bizarre, catastrophic meltdown of some sort. The announcement that they have been granted an expansion franchise is nothing but a formality now.

Now we can surmise potential team names. The best ideas thus far, in my opinion, are:

1. Kraken

2. Totems

3. Emeralds

Emeralds fits, but I'm struggling to think how that could translate to a cool logo.  And that's important.

Mountains, trees and the space needle?

Space Needle a given.

It took me about a decade to realize the Minnesota Wild logo is of some sort of snarling catlike creature, so I'm probably not the best guy to ask about logos and mascots. I say keep them simple.

The Seattle Sasquatch, lol. And they’ll be able to bring back Squatch!

Know it all.

Canucks' prospect Elias Pettersson breaks the SHL (Sweden's top tier mens league) U20 scoring record. Kent Nilsson held the record since 1976. Other notables in the top 10 include Peter Forsberg, Markus Naslund, the Sedins, and Niklas Backstrom.

He also becomes the first junior-aged player in SHL history to lead the league in scoring overall.

He was a bit before my time, but 130 points in an NHL season is incredible. If he decided to stay in the NHL longer he'd have a good case for the Hall of Fame.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin ("The Twins") are retiring from the game after this season.

We started the year with the mindset that a decision would be made in the postseason. But it became clear, after discussions with our families throughout the year, that this will be our last season. This feels right for all of us.

...

As we've said before, Vancouver has become home. This is our family's home. We plan to be part of this community long after we retire. Vancouver has given us so much and we've tried to give everything we have in return. That won't change.

In the meantime, we still have some games to play, and we still have some work to do.

Last week, tickets for Thursday’s game were being sold on sites like StubHub for less than US$30. On Monday afternoon, the cheapest ticket on StubHub was US$230.

The Sedins were class on and off the ice. Do not pass GO, go directly to the HHOF.

I wasn’t expecting to be this sad.

I’m torn on the another year or two thing. For most of the year, I was convinced they would come back on one or two year deals. Sometime around January it really hit me that this could be it.

On the one hand, for better or for worse, this is Bo and Brock’s team now. The Sedins have nothing left to prove. It does feel like time – 2011 was so long ago now. There’s zero chance the Canucks are sniffing the cup in the next two years. Another year or two risks serious injury. I totally respect wanting to leave healthy and on their own terms. It would be devastating to see one of them suffer a serious injury. The way Iginla went out was rather pathetic.

On the other hand, I still enjoy watching them play. I would have loved to see them both eclipse 1,100 points and for Danny to pot his 400th goal.

It was amazing watching these guys progress from two skinny bambi’s on the ice, guys who had trouble staying on their feet, to one of the most feared offensive duos in NHL history. Incredible. The whole story from the draft, to playing together all these years, to retirement is awesome. Love it. Love these guys. I’ll miss them.
