Sour grapes from ambulance chasers. Plenty of jurisdictions have no fault, works fine

I'm not sure any jurisdictions have no fault to the extent that is proposed by ICBC.

Would you be able to buy additional insurance through a private insurer? Under the old rules you’d only be able to tap into private insurance if your vehicle qualified.

icbc to join 21st century in 2022:

British Columbians will be able to renew their ICBC auto insurance online starting in May of 2022.

ICBC will be launching its online insurance model at that time, with people also being able to get temporary operation permits.

“We know British Columbians want more convenience when they purchase and renew their auto insurance,” Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth says. He adds work continues to deliver on reductions to insurance rates across B.C.

The province is allowing for one year of its no-fault insurance program to kick in before launching the online options.

Consultations are currently underway around licence plate decals. The province says “a decision on the future of the decal requirement” is expected sometime next year.

2022?

Jesus Christ. We also need to introduce the license-based insurance while we’re at it, since updates to ICBC’s processes seem to come every 30-years.

Didn't you hear? Firefighter Eby single-handedly doused out the financial dumpster fire.

In reality it means BC will transfer the same amount taken from ICBC accounts by the BC Liberals back to the general ledger.   Regardless of the "crown corporation" nonsense, ICBC can't just go bankrupt as it is the BC Department of Motor Vehicles.  If they lose the insurance portion then our existing DMV won't necessarily cost us less as there will be less focus on the government agency.  We already have access to a portion of our insurance privately anyways.

The 15% would be great if they announced how they fixed the dumpster fire.  Otherwise they are just a bunch of arsonists.

I went private this year for my truck and saved $150 compared to full ICBC coverage.

My buddy from Halifax who recently retired here says for just over $1,200 per year he was able to insure two passenger vehicles, a motorbike and a boat trailer. When he went in to the insurance shop he was floored when the quote came back at $1,200 just for one vehicle.

ICBC giving out one-time rebate cheques

Premier John Horgan says anyone who had car insurance policies between April 1 and Sept. 30, 2020 will receive a rebate averaging about $190. The public insurer says it has about $600 million in savings, thanks to fewer crashes, which has led to fewer claims.

Is that in addition to rebates already announced, or are these new rebates?

Wait I thought ICBC was a dumpster fire because we used it as a piggy bank whenever there was a surplus. Wouldn't it be more prudent to invest the surplus so that inevitable future unfavourable variances to budget can be smoothed out?

True. So you are saying our insurance providers shouldn't be incentives by political gains? It is a real shame there is not a private sector model that could focus on value.

I think you're asking the same thing twice, but yes this is in addition to the pro-rated rebate for the price decreases coming into affect, and therefore yes they are new rebates.

Ah that’s fantastic. Insurance in this province is absurdly high for long-time, low-risk experienced motorists.

I also think Vancouver islanders should have a different rate category. This is not the lower mainland, but we’re paying for atrocious driving habits created and fostered on the mainland. And we don’t have snow. Winter weather is a huge contributor to insurance claims.

do you think the resistance to "mileage based" insurance is because people will think its very high?  because it might surprise some people how expensive it is per km driven.

but surely that is a good system.  if you car is not on the road it should not cost much to insure it sitting in your driveway.  yes some will try to game that system as always happens.

but a guy might buy 3 vehicles if he could insure by km driven.  or a motorcycle and RV too.  that would be good for the economy.
