Viability: sure, not even a question.UBCM discussion on the possibility of online voting for civic elections by 2014: http://www.bclocalne.../130739708.html
What are your thoughts on the viability, reliability and privacy around this opportunity?
Reliability: only for those who control the technology.
Privacy: nonexistent thank you Big Brother.
This is an expensive, unnecessary chimera dreamed up by those who wish to do away with elections once and for all. Such a system is so easily manipulated that the concept of free elections might as well be consigned to the dustbin of history.
I have no problem with online polling and even asking referendum-style questions using an online system (for internet-based leadership see Scott Adams recent posts) but the actual election of our government should be open and transparent and secure as possible. Electronic elections provide none of those things.
I would rather fight the apathy and helplessness of our electors than make it even easier to vote. I mean really? Is going to a polling place and marking a ballot too much to ask?

It is certainly too much to ask of me. My vote makes no difference to the outcome, and there is no candidate worthy of support. If there was someone who understood economics, personal liberty, and had a serious commitment to reducing the size and reach of government, I might feel differently, but so long as there's no choice other than between one top-down central planner or another I'll just stay on the couch.

Now as for your comment that there is no candidate worthy of your support, then I would say fair enough. If you have done your research on the candidates and if you have determined that none share your ideals, beliefs and philosophies, then I agree it may be best to stay on the couch.
But I feel the two reasons to not vote are very different.

@davek - I disagree with your comment that "My vote makes no difference to the outcome". I ran in the 2008 Central Saanich election and I missed a seat on council by only 74 votes!
You are free to disagree all you like, but your example proves my point. Had I voted, then you would have still lost, and more likely by 75 points. My vote would have made no difference to the outcome.

What about running for council yourself if there are no candidates worthy of your support? Is there a niche of ideals, beliefs or philosophies that you aren't seeing in the candidates?

But this makes no sense. You are describing reasons not to vote at all.
The question is a choice between online voting and polling places.

My first attempt at adding a quote, hope it works out!
@Tedward - To answer your question above, when we see 33% voter turnout last election in CS, maybe going to a polling station is indeed "too much to ask".
My task over the next 6+ weeks it to find out why the other 66% are not voting, and to determine what it will take to get them off the couch and into a polling station! Even if we can get half that, there is an opportunity to double the CS vote from 2008!
