Should elected officials and municipal employees live where they serve?

Marianne Alto has done nothing and should not have elected. I really am still in shock that people would vote for someone from outside of the city that owned a home based business who did not think it important to have obtained a business license for the business. So we are trusting municipal decisions to someone that did not consult a municipality prior to starting her business in one.
I really had much higher opinion of the average Victorian prior to that election. It was such an obvious sheeple election it hurts.

I don't think votors cared if Alto was from outside the city. The machine to get her elected was in place to make sure the bridge referendum went the way the city wanted it to go.

I hold nothing but the utmost respect for the councillors who truly put in the time to serve their city, whether I agree with their take on issues or not. Unfortunately some councillors are only on council to serve a slate and they make me wonder who's calling the shots and why.
I've been told that Marianne Alto is actually Mayor Fortin's NDP superior and depending on who's wearing which hat where, one of them holds the talking stick, so to speak. Can anyone shed more light on the hierarchy of the provincial NDP and how it relates to Mayor Fortin and councillor Alto?

I think the key verbiage here is "serve their city". When you live in Saanich and serve in Victoria, which city do you serve?

Both Marianne Alto and Charlayne Thornton-Joe are Saanich residents.
Well, don't let it be said the Ms. Thornton-Joe doesn't do anything for us:

Exactly. If you cannot vote in an election you should not be eligible to run. Pretty simple.I have long been of the opinion that you should only be allowed to run if you can vote for yourself.
On the other part of the question, it is the elected officials who hold staff to account so I care not where a city employee lives.

Elected officials may depend heavily on the votes of staff, as well as their friends and family. This can make it difficult not only to hold them to account, but also to restrain wages and benefits.
