A group of experts in internet and privacy law want the government to study provisions they say could drastically affect Canadians' privacy rights.

The provisions, which critics call warrantless online spying, were included in three lawful access technical surveillance bills from the last parliamentary session, but are expected to be rolled into the omnibus crime bill the Conservatives plan to table this fall. The Conservative election platform promised to reintroduce the electronic surveillance provisions as part of the omnibus crime bill.

The problem with digital locks

After repeated unsuccessful attempts in a minority parliament, the Tories are once again attempting to change Canada's copyright laws, which have remained essentially unchanged for decades. As before, the initiative has encountered significant resistance from opposition parties and members of the public. But this time around, the Tories have a majority in Parliament.

The Conservatives' first attempt at copyright reform in 2008 received significant pushback because it favoured the rights of content creators and distributors over those of consumers. As a result, the government held a consultation process, receiving submissions and soliciting feedback from Canadians during the summer of 2009.

It looks like Bill C-11 has come into effect this month. This bill changes the copyright laws with respect to downloading copyright files from the internet.

Oddly enough, their attitude just makes me less likely to purchase content legitimately.

Does streaming equate to downloading?

I suppose it depends on where you're streaming from.

Clearly streaming from services like Netflix, UltraViolet, etc... you'd be in the clear, but if the host you're connecting to is in the business of streaming the latest and greatest TV shows and movies for free, then I'd suspect you might end up on a list in the binder next to the binders holding the terrorist and no fly lists.

There's a lot of things wrong with Netflix, selection only being one of them.

We are watching the US version of Netflix (thanks to Unblock) and it is awesome, not only for the kids but last night we started to watch American Horror Story and OmG, addicted. With it and Hulu Plus, we are not missing much. That is until Game of Thrones comes back on.

Anonymox for Firefox is free.

How do you buy Hulu plus and Netflix US if you don't have a US credit card?

Switch it to the UK and get some awesome shows on BBC Iplayer. ITV has some lesser quality goodies as well... Celebrity Juiced is my favourite garbagy show.

Just discovered that if you're a Rogers Wireless customer you can get a semi-decent selection of streaming content from rogersondemand.com at no extra cost.

Your netflix.ca account will let you access netflix.com as well, you just need to fool your browser.

I wonder if using a service such as Unblock is considered "circumventing protection schemes"

I hope this ramps up to war-on-drugs level of insanity. Harper could really fix our economy by investing in the millions of prison (private prison of course) cells needed to be tough on these horrible horrible criminals.

Set up a Paypal account and tell it you are in the US. Paypal doesn't check.
