More Dishes Please...

We've been back a couple of times since our first visit and here are some additional dishes we've tried - all were good!

  • I'm still amazed at how well the Sony RX100 shoots in low-light.
  • The $24 meatloaf.  It's really good, but seriously, $24?  Hmm, well, it is stuffed with ham, and gruyere cheese, and apple, and basil, and BACON!  Mmm...
  • The Salmon - amazing!
  • The Prawn Tacos - amazing!
  • Chicken and Waffles - we saw a segment on Triple-D's that showed a joint serving chicken and waffles and just had to give them a try.
  • Our most recent visit was Friday night and by 6:30 the place was full.  I think the word is out.

Yeah, I thought $24 meatloaf was a bit much. I had it a while back, nothing at all memorable but the price. It was ok, but for about $16. Meatloaf is leftovers, fer chrissake! Maybe it was Designer Meatloaf?

It's all in the presentation when you don't know if you should eat it or just photograph it. One hundred forty-seven peas, thirty-six bits carrots diced, and a dollop of mashed potatoes under a two X four chunk of meatloaf. The ingredients probably cost $4.95.

Nice pictures though, is this the same Sony RX100 that picks up the fine detail of the bridgework going on across the harbour?

No, that's the HX-400V, also a Sony.  That camera has a small 1/2.3 sensor and a 50x optical zoom.  The RX100 is a point and shoot with a large 1" sensor and a fast 1.8f lens so it does really well in low light.  It has a small 4.3x zoom.

Go and see how much beef chuck, bacon, ham, gruyere, cheese curds and veal demi you can buy for $5.

In their entirety they'll obviously be more expensive. Portioned out, not so much.

We recently ordered a Choux Choux picnic package. For $25 it was absolutely loaded with meats, cheese, and other items. Incredible, delicious and very affordable.

Mike, does this come in picnic type basket that would make it good for gift giving? Also, do you know if you could take this across the border into the US?

You can't typically take meat across the border, no.

Cheese is fine though.

Yes, grocery stores are typically less expensive than full service, sit down restaurants.

It's not wrapped up all fancy-like. Sure tastes good, though. I'd give Choux Choux a call and confirm what they can offer in terms of packaging and presentation.

Hopefully you've all had dinner...

If not, may I suggest their Bistro Salad, (Arugula, Mizuna, Apples, Fennel & Manchego Cheese. Smoked Tomato "French Dressing"), just $7 during Happy Hour

And my wife's favorite entree, the Gambas Al Ajillo (Prawns sauteed with Garlic, Olive Oil, Paprika, Sherry & Chilis. With Patatas Bravas, Fennel Salad & Grilled Baguette.)  $26

or if you love curry, our second favorite, the Rockfish Curry (Pan Roasted Local Rockfish, Malaysian Red Coconut Curry, Crispy Rice Cake & Fennel Salad) $23.  Just remember to ask for some bread at the end to sop up the sauce!

On the other hand, you might be adventurous and try the special.  The other night it was Branzino!  Need I say more.

Why would they be surprised about the cook shortage - it's all chefs ever talk about.

"Hey how's it going? Got enough staff?"

"Yeah, pretty good, just need one or two so not to bad."

Seems to me they could offer one or two more than they are making now. Jeez don't close in the summer that's a terrible decision.

That is one bizarrely run restaurant. Odd hours, closed on days when there are massive events downtown, even though they have a nice sunny patio. It has always been run like they secretly want it to fail.

No signs of the restaurant reopening. It's been nearly three months since it closed.
