'follow the food' (the bird motto everywhere)

Stop feeding them, and the seagulls (& crows) will stop coming (pretty much, anyway).

Did you know that there are businesses (restaurants) regularly feeding seagulls downtown? Not kidding!! I've seen this done at a couple of places this past year (staff entertainment? keeping down food disposal costs?) -- whatever their reasoning, it's apt to drive people away from our downtown as the practice attracts birds, nearby nest building, etc..

I sometimes ponder how a business owner could be so dense as to not realize the consequences on the business community. Anyhoo, downtown's bylaw officer assures me they'll respond to complaints of this nature (likely I suspect with a warning first, then heavy fines for subsequent offenses -- take snapshots of the offenders in action and email, you can use the City's inquiry form to ask for the bylaw office's email address)

No small amount of restaurant dumpsters are pretty open to seagulls -- that's reportable, too. Heh! A couple of months ago (early morning) I spotted a couple of ripped open garbage bags beside a restaurant's too small dumpster being enjoyed by some crows [restaurants should not be allowed to just plunk garbage bags of food alongside overfilled dumpsters, that's like ringing the dinner bell for crows & seagulls]. The bylaw officer assures me a second report will trigger his interest (he seemed to think this might have been a 'one off' incident).

Firefighters put out blaze after seagull catches fire on power pole

Turkeys weren’t the only birds that turned out well-done this holiday.

A seagull that made contact with live power lines while standing atop a James Bay hydro pole was electrocuted, causing a fire at the top of the pole Thursday morning.

B.C. Hydro temporarily disconnected power to the area, so that Victoria firefighters could douse the fire.

Now if only we could convince more seagulls to do this.

Are you suggesting it's a suicide?

Sure, just like the whales beaching themselves. Seagulls have feelings to you know, all those invectives add up over time.

Guess what? The gulls are starting to collect nest material and set up their nest sites on top of downtown Victoria buildings. Which also means now should be the time to remove this material, before it becomes an actual nest. The seagull issue usually comes up too late in the breeding season, when eggs have been laid or have already hatched, to do much.

Exactly, landlords should be acting now.

Park in the parkades and not on the street during the pooping season.

Maybe we should try to teach the seagulls that deer are good to eat. That way, we'd slowly get rid of the deer population, and all of the seagulls would move to Oak Bay!
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Or vice-versa.

Sometimes right downtown I'll see someone get a bunch of old bread and start what I call a "seagull tornado".  A huge vortex of seaguls spinning around the person throwing food in the air.  If you are the one doing the feeding you are in the eye of the storm and fairly safe, but everything outside is caught in a vortex of seagull poop.

Seagulls do not require human assistance to acquire sustenance.

When will someone stop the old ethnic guy from feeding seagulls on the corner of Yates and Douglas. The place is a shi'tehole, unhygienic, avoid at all costs and hope the tourists don't wander up there.
