If the data is incomplete it's going to be more difficult to contrive a rationalization for not removing the deer.

Lots. There are very few scientific studies of urban black tailed deer
What are we hoping to learn beyond their movement pattern? Which is what the GPS is for.

Anyone tried Coyote Urine? Been thinking about it a lot, just not sure. Not sure how they obtain it either.
Some anti cull activists were suggesting it at one time can't seem to find the article anymore.

I'm not sure if the island deer, having never been exposed to coyotes would have any fear of their urine smell.
Better thing to do would be to introduce coyotes to the island, we need more predators.

Do we not have coyotes here? They are a nuisance in the Fraser Valley.
We have wolves up island, yeah? Those would make short work of the deer... among other critters...

Some genius will import them soon enough. They've expanded their range massively in recent decades. They're all over the city of Vancouver.

The story does not say if the deer got away, or if the chief shot it dead. No other witnesses either.

Hi everyone, I'm unsure if this is an allowable post (if not please delete), but I am a journalism student at UVic and am currently making a radio documentary concerning the deer-human conflict in Victoria. Do you feel strongly about this issue and want to have your voice heard? What do you think about the past deer cull and the current contraceptive program implemented by the District of Oak Bay? Do you have any crazy deer interaction stories that you tell your coworkers at the water cooler that you feel like sharing? I am looking for personal, local perspectives on this topic that would provide balance to my story. Thanks!

Contraceptives for deer in Oak Bay.
To be clear, we allow 50,000 deer to be killed by hunters every year in BC. Why not just kill all our urban deer, and subtract it from the hunter total?
We net out at zero, and we eliminate the urban problem.

Politicians can't seem to just come up with simple answers like that. Its so weird. Just give 100 bow hunters a license for 1 deer. That'll solve most of the problem. Their reward is to keep the meat. They can hunt on or from any public ROW, and can retrieve a deer so long as they don't trespass into enclosed backyards.
