Bus info for Canada Day. Gorge closed so Route 11 detour, a shuttle from Tillicum Bay to Gorge, certain stops downtown closing after 10 PM, temp stops opening after 10 PM and the usual no alcohol on the bus.... https://bctransit.co...s/1403650058313

The buses have a notice with the summer schedule changes. This isn't on the website yet and I didn't notice until I was getting off but it seems the usual, less UVic/Camosun service, boosted 70/72/75 service and 53 servicing Thetis Lake.

It seems the preview schedules are up (go to a route and it lets you preview upcoming changes). It looks like they're retiring the 16, I assume for the summer but does anyone remember if they did that last year? 51 still seems to be going although I guess that one does serve more of a purpose than being a quicker 26 from Uptown.

The #16 was maintained through the summer last year but only provided peak hour service (no midday).

That's what it's doing currently. I guess last year it didn't get very good service and with the 26 essentially doing the same thing I guess they decided to just use the resources elsewhere (still no service for the Sooke Potholes though).

The Number 6 Royal Oak suffered a blown engine as it passed through the intersection of Fort and Quadra just before noon, sending a huge cloud of smoke into the air while dirty oil poured out onto the street.

Not surprised to see ~20 year old coach fail. As an aside, BC Transit now follows US standards are keeps buses for 12 years only, rather than ~12+refit+~6 years.

As much as I am frequently posting in here for better service to certain areas I think they should prioritize getting new buses and getting these ~20 year old buses off the road. How old are the doubledeckers that keep catching fire?

So safe to say that bus is toast and we'll never see it again?

Oh wow!

I noticed that that vintage of BCT's busses are appearing as training vehicles for firefighter exercises. There's one that's been "worked over" by a local FD near Saseenos Elementary.

Victoria Buzz has more, with better photos:

Interesting to note BCT ensures us passengers were evacuated "as a precaution". As if there were an alternative? "Stay put, folks, a tow truck will be here soon to pull you around the rest of the route up to Royal Oak."

It depends. If they need it and the frame isn't toast, they could do an engine swap. What heavy duty mechanics do to keep vehicles like this on the road is nothing short of amazing

So as I was on my walk as a 21 heading to become a 7 passed I thought why don't they just combine routes like this? Pick one of the numbers and when it leaves UVic say "XX Interurban -Camosun Only/VITP/Viaduct Loop" and when leaving Camosun/VITP "XX UVic via Fairfield". I don't really think it's necessary to make sure people know they go downtown as other routes like the 11, 14, 15, 22, 24, 25, etc don't and they seem to be fine. Looking at the schedule there are some 7 trips that don't switch to 21s and just stop downtown (weekday nights and every second trip on Sat/Sun) but they don't make other routes that regularly don't complete the full route (like the 39, every second trip is just between UVic and Camosun and on weekends it's just between UVic and Royal Oak). Routes like the 30&31/75 and 50/61 combos are fine since all of those have regular trips that aren't connected to another route.

Maybe the 7 and 21 is just a marriage of convenience and they don’t want to change all of the bus stops again later.

That 7 used to be similiarly interlined with the 2, which at least made a certain amount of sense as they both went through Oak Bay.

The electric bus will be added to service on July 23. It will cover Routes 2, 4, 11 and 27 https://bctransit.co...d=1403650193974

Yet another accident on the TCH caused significant delays for motorists, but especially impacted transit riders on the West Shore who were waiting very long periods of time for buses like the 50, 58, 61, 65, and other routes that start downtown before meandering through local West Shore areas.

Meanwhile the common disappointment was one Not In Service bus after another passing by commuters stuck on the West Shore with zero bus service along the aforementioned routes.

Why can’t transit have a contingency plan for these scenarios? Sooke was completely cut off from transit access because of an accident 35 kilometres away. How can an entire area of a city be left stranded like that?
