I gotta give them props for that nice deck on the roof of the modern lowrise section on the Fernwood Road side.

Neighbours can get peek in the newly renovated historic Vic High with an open house this weekend.

Knowledgeable, enthusiastic students will host stations around the city’s only high school, sharing highlights of its recent seismic upgrade and expansion of its 1260 Grant St. location.

Vic High was founded in 1876 on the grounds of the current Central Middle School and is the oldest public high school west of Manitoba.

People have been using the volleyball courts already, which I suppose is a good sign considering the weather.

The new turf, sand volleyball courts, walking track, and new housing can certainly make for a pleasant vibe on a sunny day.

‘This isn’t safe’: Vic High parent calls out renovated track design

I do not see the issue.  Sure, it's not a race-grade spiriting track, and I suppose it will not be used as such.  It's an all-weather walking/jogging trail.

Somebody trips and falls there is no give. Oh no, somebody is going to get their knee scraped, how could we live with that? How about we line the sides of it with bubble wrap? My god, we are raising a generation of wimps.

Not a lick of info on the regular news channels via SD61, or via the school’s website. None that I can find, anyway.

Vic High served as sports hub both for school and community

The Vic High gym and old Memorial Stadium were as much community venues as school assets.

Out of that field came the likes of two-time all-world selection Hans De Goede, who captained Canada in the rugby World Cup, and Ian Bridge, who played for Canada in the 1986 soccer FIFA World Cup, and fellow Canada-capped standout Brian Robinson.

A former Vic High Tyees soccer goaltender, Moe Elewonibi, came off that pitch and went into another sport, winning the Outland Award as the best offensive lineman in the NCAA before becoming a Super Bowl champion with the Washington Redskins.

Kerry Short, who became a lawyer, high-jumped from the Vic High field to runner-up in the 1974 B.C. high school track and field championships. The jumper who beat him that year at provincials, Greg Joy of Van Tech, went on to win the Olympic silver medal two years later at Montreal.

The old track is now gone, part of a redevelopment of the Vic High Memorial Stadium, which includes a new artificial turf field for the next generation of athletes coming up. It remains community-oriented, with use also as a field for the Bays United youth soccer association.

The new, paved track encircling the turf field, however, is controversial among athletes and the sporting community because it was limited to two lanes due to budget and is suitable only for track training and community walking, and not for meets.
