is there irony in the fact our "working harbour" is being used to assemble equipment for the coal industry during a climate emergency here?

...

Ahh, but THIS coal stacker is destined for Neptune Terminals in North Vancouver.  According to Neptune, their terminal ONLY processes metallurgical or steelmaking coal, the kind used to make steel.  This type of coal is primarily mined in BC and provides the carbon source needed to make steel.  From the minescanada.ca website:

Steelmaking coal has characteristics that make it ideal for heating and transform it into coke, the carbon source needed to make steel. Metallurgical-grade coal is heated to over 1000 degrees Celsius in the absence of oxygen, and then quickly cooled in water or air to produce a hard, porous brick of carbon known as coke. The coke is fed into a blast furnace with iron ore and a handful of other ingredients to make molten iron, which is then mixed (alloyed) with other metals to make the many diverse types of steel that are the backbone of our everyday lives.

So unless we can all live without steel, the machine assembled at Point Hope seems like it's going to be put to good use.

For the past month they've been high pressure blasting ships, all day, every work day. It is akin to sitting at the entrance to a spray car wash.

This is quite a bit different than the past five years. I suspect there is new pressure equipment, plus there seems to be a large increase in Navy ships which seem to require this type of maintenance.

I'm a still a big supporter of the shipyard. At some point, probably as Dockside Green continues to develop, this could become more of an issue. Hopefully Point Hope can find some way to mitigate the noise.

Was driving along the Bay St. bridge today. Saw one of BC Ferries' newer vessels alongside the wharf - needing work already? How old are they? Also saw what looked like one of Vancouver's SeaBus ferries in the water nearby.

It is the brand new Island Discovery hybrid. Launched in June it has already broken down multiple times and now in for some more permanent fixes. Here is the service notice:

“October 16, 2020

Island Discovery Warranty Work
Mid-October through mid-November

Island Discovery will be out of service mid-October through mid-November for scheduled warranty work.

This work will take place at Point Hope Maritime in Victoria and includes upgrades to cabling between main generators and switchboards, work on camshafts, valves and pistons, and installation of new life raft doors.

During this time, Island Aurora will provide relief service between Powell River and Texada Island, and Quadra Queen II will provide relief service on the Port McNeill – Bay – Sointula route. There will be no change to sailing schedules.”

Well it's Taco Tuesday so what better time than to toss a couple of photos on here of the "TACONITE" which has been in dry dock at Point Hope for months now.

Her story is an interesting one going back to when she was built in 1930, through to a few years ago when the yacht was up for sale.  She's seen better days, that's for sure, and still bears the crest of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

Spotted her in dry dock last month and immediately made a impromptu trip to the grocery store to put tacos on the menu later that night.  Thanks for posting her colorful history, very cool to hear about her involvement in the filming of Insomnia!

I'll betchya this old tug (built in 1959, is that OLD?) has some stories to tell...

I wonder if they'll get that anchor cleaned up and running again.  Looks pretty rusted shut to me.

I love snooping around Point Hope shipyards. Lots of history down there.

This is in action somewhere on the BC coast i presume,

Speaking of PHS anyone know the status of their expansion plan(s)? As I recall they were quite ambitious but haven't heard anything more about them in some time......

well it's taken them two years to get the windows installed on the office buildings.  Exterior door are still not operational. Plus last fall they installed a Britco security box (with sleeping man inside) so you can no longer wander around down to water's edge.  Methinks the project has stalled?

Funds were redirected into the Harbour Ferries deal, and now insurance is through the roof thanks to the theft. It could be a while.

*this is not investment advice.

**I also might be joking about the redirection of funds, and the insurance rate.

The Taconite is back on water.

Clearly that wasn't a complete refit as the hull and many other parts of the craft were in pretty bad shape only a few days ago.  Must have simply needed some engine/propeller work or such.
