A major reimagining of a lower-cost seniors’ enclave in Victoria will make a dent in the need for affordable housing in the city, but it will still be years before the first new unit will invite its first tenant through the door.
Victoria council has given enthusiastic approval to a 313-unit master-planned housing project in the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood. The massive project, which could take up to 20 years to fully build out, will replace Chown Place, a 108-unit low-rise seniors complex set on nearly six acres.
Joint government funding of $50 million is going to help complete an affordable housing project in Victoria’s Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.
This week, Victoria’s Member of Parliament, Will Greaves, announced the $50 million would go towards 77 homes, at 8 Chown Place, an affordable housing building for families and seniors living independently.
He announced the news on behalf of the Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada.

The funding will bring “68 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and nine three-bedroom townhomes for seniors and families,” states the federal government’s release.
@ $650,000 per home.
