After thirty-five years Fat Phege's Fudge Factory, the first retail shoppe to open in Market Square in 1976, will be forced to close as the owners will not be renewing their lease.
The Company that owns Market Square, Anthem Properties, states in a letter that they will be changing Market Square "from a festival retail centre to a street-orientated mixed retail centre" which apparantly means they want 'to appeal to a more sophisticated clientele'.
So much for small city charm.

"from a festival retail centre to a street-orientated mixed retail centre"

That's screwy, even for marketing lingo...

^How more "street oriented" can it be? I can only interpret that as meaning they want to build onto the interior courtyard.

As a teenager, no trip to Victoria would have been complete without a trip to Market Square News (probably Victoria's original "head shop") for some chocolate rollie papers or some other exotic paraphernalia and then a stop at Phege's to grab a little something for afterwards...

Market Square hasn't been a festival retail centre since Amadon sold it to Anthem, and then under the Jawl's was it truly a festival retail centre revered for its popular festivals.

Know it all.

Phege's last day will be this Saturday, May 5th. They'll be open their full normal Saturday hours.
