Cornell Babie, 1932 - 2018

He moved to Victoria in 1969, purchasing Morrison Chev Olds, which was at the corner of Douglas Street and Finlayson Street, and renaming it Cornell Chevrolet Oldsmobile Cadillac.

A long-time resident and respected businessman, Cornell owned and operated Cornell Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Cadillac from 1969-2006. He also owned and operated the Holiday Inn, now the Comfort Inn, from 1987 until the present.

He bought a vacant lot on Blanshard Street at Finlayson where he stored his inventory before building a Holiday Inn that opened in 1987 on the property, now a Comfort Inn.

That was a Ramada before it was a Holiday Inn.

Victoria Coun. Geoff Young said Baird encouraged him to run for council in 1983 (he was elected) after they met on the Greater Victoria Public Library board. “She came in with a good, straight, common-sense approach but also with a big-picture view because she was obviously aware of a lot of other issues in the city.”

Former Saanich mayor Frank Leonard, who served on the Capital Regional District board with Baird, remembers her with respect. “She had strong views and expressed them extremely well.”

Dave Duncan (born 1933) was a local author of fantasy/sci-fi books. Have you heard of him? The name was new to me.

Dave Duncan is a prolific writer of fantasy and science fiction, best known for his fantasy series, especially “The Seventh Sword”, “A Man of His Word”, and “The King's Blades”. He is both a founding and an honorary lifetime member of SF Canada, and an inductee of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. His books have been translated into fifteen languages.

Love that he wrote his own obit. And he sounds like someone I would have like to have known.

Seems like he knew everybody in the business. He must have had some amazing stories.

So this is notable because he is the stepson of the current Minister of Agriculture?
