Premier Danielle Smith said Wednesday that Alberta plans to submit an application for a new oil pipeline to northwestern British Columbia, describing it as a higher calling for those in need around the world.

“What stands before us right now is a once in a generation opportunity to unlock our wealth and resources and become a world-leading energy superpower,” Smith told a news conference in Calgary.

“The world wants more Canadian oil and gas,” she added.

“There are billions of people around the world living in energy poverty who demand a higher standard of living.

Isn’t this …the Northern Gateway that Trudeau killed?

My goodness. It would have been operational by now.

After losing billions of dollars on Keystone XL and tank cars, Alberta is pursuing another pipeline

Danielle Smith announces new proposal, but says government won't actually build it

ie.

First Nations opinions on the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline are divided, with some First Nations signing agreements for economic benefits like employment and equity stakes, while the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs have vehemently opposed the project, citing environmental concerns for cultural sites like the Wedzin Kwa (Morice River) and asserting their right to free, prior, and informed consent on unceded territory. This division creates a fundamental conflict between the authority of Hereditary Chiefs, who have never consented, and the agreements made by some elected band councils.

Blame the crown. They did a rush job of it here because they panicked that the Americans would take over as they started pouring in because of the gold rush.
They had a hundred years to do it right. But we know how government programs go.

Why do we want to sell more discounted oil to the US for them to profit from?

We need to sell to other countries at world prices.

Our oil is too difficult for most to refine.

We should build a refinery central to Vancouver and Calgary. Especially for jet fuel at YVR.

B.C. and Alberta have been fighting off and on over pipelines for more than a decade now, but the latest intensifying spat looks to be the most serious yet.

When they were premiers Christy Clark (B.C.) and Alison Redford (Alberta) clashed starting in 2012 about the Northern Gateway line.

Alberta: “We desperately need it.” B.C.: “What’s in it for us?”

The fight was confined mostly to frosty appearances, abrupt cancellations and eventually smoothed out.

Their respective successors, John Horgan and Rachel Notley, kept up the fight, but over a different line — the Trans Mountain route to Metro Vancouver. Alberta: “We desperately need it.” B.C.: “We’ll fight it using every tool in to the toolbox.”

The never-ending threats, lawsuits and arguments (which B.C. lost) contributed to the runaway overruns that prompted nationalization of the line and sent the eventual cost of the TMX north of $36 billion (originally budgeted at $6 billion.)

The new pipeline, which doubled one that was built in the 1950s in less than a year, eventually started pumping in 2024 and is making billions of dollars, but the scars from the old battles are still fresh.

Meanwhile, the US just sends more oil tankers up and down the coast irrespective of any Canadian spats over tanker risks.

BC is going to eventually grant it. But first we have to go through political theatre.

The first pipeline we should build is to Eastern Canada, so they can stop importing oil from other countries.

Carney doesn't have the guts to do that, though.

New national polling suggests Canadians have warmed up to the idea of a new pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast. Even NDPers are flabbergasted at Eby’s social media video where he strongly denounces Alberta’s plans by calling it fictional, then dwelling on the negatives of a fictional plan. If you haven’t heard it yet, you should look it up.

We are in a bad way in Canada and unless our nation can regain the trust of international investor markets, and start selling its resources for fair market value, we can say goodbye to a swath of social services and public realm investments we have grown accustomed to.

Next up should be nothing less than a municipal taxation revolution, with each year the budget falling by 5%, not rising by 10% to 15%.

Yet the TC runs an editorial today saying commercials rents should be regulated.
