Sign are generally boring now.No life very plain jane. Many buildings put up are the same......boring , drab,,yawn yawn.

When I was a kid I used to like seeing these signs with the spinning Balls on them. They were spun by the wind.

So you can also see the Woodwards Gas bar and the Coffee House sign in this shot

History Buff, I'm loving your old vs new postings. I didn't move here until 1991 so it's nice to see some of these 70's and 80's photos :)

A friend of mine saw that photo of Mayfair and immediately recognized it. His dad worked for Neon Products and they installed the spinning acrylic balls.

I'm cross posting this vintage tire store photo because it has some great old billboards in it:

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

This is at a location in Downtown Victoria taken in 1918
Checkout the road construction.
If anyone want to guess where this is please give it a shot.
I knwo the location and will post more of the photo which will eventually (or should ) give up the location.

Not Waddington . The wooden Blocks would make it appear to be in that area.

Here is more of the Photo

I would need to see more of the upper right. Are these buildings still around?

Ok Now it may get easier for you.

None of the buildings that you in the photos are standing today.
There are 2 in this picture .
1 is identifiable with a little bit of searching. If you have older city directory at home it gets a little easier

Ill post the solution before I go to bed tonight within an hour

The Photo was taken at the corner of Yates St and Blanshard St
The marchers are walking on Yates heading south towards Douglas. They are crossing Blanshard in this shot

The building in the previous photo is on Johnson St

The billboards were on buildings like Taxis stands that were located where the ATRIUM is now located. Farther up Yates St the furthest building with the Arch is the Dominion Theatre and the one to its left is the Plaza Theatre. the 2 Theatres were located where the BC Tel ( Telus) building is now across the Street from an empty parking lot where the Capitol Theatre used to be . the Capitol was razed to make way for the Capitol 6 Theatre ( Remember Famous Charlies Restaurant)

Here are the photos together
Top one 1918
Bottom 1946

Now that History Buff posted the location, I found this instead as that building in the background: http://maps.google.c...9,,0,-12.2&z=18

Is the building in the top left corner the old BC Tel at the corner of Blanshard and Johnson?

Not Waddington . The wooden Blocks would make it appear to be in that area.

I believe it's the storage place beside the old Peacock Billiards location.

Edit: Sorry, you're right about the one on the left edge, with the fire escapes. I'm talking about the one in the background.

Those were some damn fancy old theatres on the north side of Yates there. And for some reason the one we bothered to preserve was the Coronet.
