There are often cyclists crossing the highway at the Tanner road intersection. Going between Lochside trail and tanner ridge. There’s no cyclist crossing anywhere nearby

I have never seen a biker turning onto Keating from 17.

Lol, I wonder why… but in all seriousness, if they’re improving cycling infrastructure on Keating, would be nice for a way to connect to the other side of the highway. I’ve often wanted to get out to Keating by bike, just really difficult to do so safely right now.

Excepting the lochside and some of the quieter country roads, Central Saanich isn't really a great place to cycle. People drive like maniacs out there.

I used to bike from town to keating and make that turn. That entire trip sucked. Buses would buzz me all the time. One clipped me once even.

The province is in the midst of negotiations with Central Saanich landowners to acquire parts of 17 properties for the construction of the $76.8 million Keating flyover project.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said it is working with property owners and expects to acquire the land before it puts the flyover project out to tender in the fall.

In a statement, ministry staff said the acquisitions include two entire parcels of land and partial slices of 15 other sites.

The Highway 17 and Keating Cross Road flyover project will replace the northbound left turn onto Keating Cross Road with a separated overpass, designed to improve access for businesses and residents and make the highway safer.

Buses able to cut the line and commute time along Pat Bay Highway

The commute to and from the Saanich Peninsula got a little quicker this week after the province opened up new lanes that allow buses to jump the queue. Part of a $7.

Part of a $7.6-million project to improve the efficiency of transit service along the highway, the new lanes installed at Mount Newton Cross Road and the Patricia Bay Highway opened for use on Thursday.

It's interesting that none of the reports or releases suggest how much time this actually saves bus passengers.

That detail must be somewhere.

I actually think eliminating the #70 stop (on then off the highway) at McKenzie would make more sense.   It's lightly used and there are alternatives for people to get to the #70 from McKenzie.  Or stop the jaunt around Sidney on every run.

Yeah I don’t think this makes much difference at all. That light is not one that gets backed up.

I can only think southbound during ferry traffic it’ll make a difference.

It does. You bypass a lot of cars.

I honestly think it should start a kilometer back from the intersection heading southbound. Otherwise the bus is still stuck in multiple light cycles before it reaches the jump lane at peak congestion.

Pat Bay traffic seems to have doubled in the last ten years.

^ My brother and I used to carry our aluminum boat across that road to plunk it into Elk Lake.

No sweat.

We used to canoe up the river from Cordova Bay / Mt. Doug right up to Elk Lake.

Ha! Now you are making fun of me. Everyone knows the river that drains Beaver and Elk is the mighty Colquitz.

That’s the one river Lewis and Clark were unable to tame, I believe. If I remember my history correctly.

Keating Flyover Project is out for tender on BCBid, closing date Feb 28.

The project will replace the northbound left turn onto Keating Cross Road with a "flyover" overpass, eliminating the need to turn across busy highway traffic and reducing congestion.

Other features of the project include:

Widening of Keating Cross Road,

Installation of new sidewalk on Keating Cross Road,

Installation of bus-on-shoulder facilities that support future plans for bus rapid transit on the Pat Bay Highway and,

Realignment of the southbound on-ramp to Victoria.

THE PROJECT WILL RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT UNDER THE CANADA-BRITISH COLUMBIA NEW BUILDING CANADA FUND - PROVINCIAL - TERRITORIAL INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONET - NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PROJECTS (NBCF-PTIC-NRP)

Estimated Contract Duration 30 months
