A Facebook group called Malahat Drive - The accidents have to stop was started recently with the goal of raising awareness about the safety issues along the Malahat and putting pressure on government to give up the shoulder shrugs and make the road safer.

Yesterday the admin of the group posted the following:

I was invited to go on a "tour of the corridor" in which I met with Kirsten Pedersen, and an engineer, as well as 3 first responders. We drove the entire stretch of the Malahat (and back) and pointed out problematic areas along the way. The first responders really were the stars of the show because they've been working this road for many, many years and had so much valuable input as to what needs to happen to stop the head on collisions.

We prioritized list of which stretches were most important, from #1-#4. The most important area (priority #1) to put barrier's down is the stretch by the Shawnigan Lake Turnoff, all the way down to Aspen Road.

We were told they found the information VERY helpful in determining where to go from here. They were going to take their information to the Minister. Having the engineer there was really helpful. Kirsten said that in order for them to start looking at making the Malahat safe, they needed to have this drive, and see what can be done, and where they are going to put the money first. I think that too is a strong commitment. This is the FARTHEST this has gone with any initiative to make the Malahat safe and I see it as yet another success in making this highway one step closer to safe.

Looking forward to the report out at the end of March, and hopefully the Minister will give me more good news in moving forward!

Thank you all again for your deep support!!! We're getting there!!

Dare I say we're on the dawn of a "Malahat Spring?"
