It's not ideal but what other option do we have?

You're exactly right Mike. When people talk about amalgamation, they often add up the savings by eliminating separate municipal government structures. But the CRD could go at that time too, saving untold millions.
But...until then CRD it is.

Personally I think they need to go. They do nothing. They are an arrogant lot that just collect wages from our tax dollars and arbitrarily make decisions that should go to a referendum or public consultation.
I'm sure you write this ironically. Their governance model may not be perfect, but they do provide some value through economies of scale. Imagine 13 municipalities and two electoral districts having to run their own landfills or 15 different water systems and reservoirs.

Just one more reason for amalgamation: to eliminate the CRD.
I really dont see how amalgamation would eliminate the CRD
BC should have just called the regional districts by the name that every other jurisdiction in North America calls them. COUNTYS
Yes, Alberta,Ontario and even Nova Scotia call them counties as do all the American States..At least most of them. Alaska calls them Boroughs
My personal views on amalgamation is that 13 could become 8 or so
Victoria and Esquimalt
Saanich and View Royal
Langford and Colwood
Oakbay- They should be Saanich too only because its Saanich Cops that have to do investigations for the Oak Bay cops for anything more serious than a speeding wheel chair on a sidewalk.
Sidney-Central Saanich- North Saanich
Sooke-....Well... They are on their own
