Thanks to pressure from industry, the feds have backed off on their promise to deliver an alcohol excise tax increase in the 4% range.  This is now being held at 2% for the next two years as well as an unexpected bonus for brewers!

"And there's more good news for craft breweries! The excise duty rate on the first 15,000 hectolitres of beer brewed in Canada will by cut in half for two years. This will provide the typical craft brewery with up to $86,952 in additional tax relief in 2024-25."

Thanks, truckers!

Vancouver- legal liquor public consumption area. With my meal, purchased from a nearby eatery.

Victoria will soon have one as well I think...

I suppose the Liberals will consider this "listening to the people" despite going ahead with the far more egregious carbon tax increase on April 1st:whyme:

Ndp is responsible for the carbon tax here. Blame them.

Actually, blame them both. I’m sure you already do.

I do indeed blame them both. If Ottawa wasn't forcing a carbon tax on much of Canada, a more enlightened government in BC might also see the error of their ways. Of course "enlightened NDP" is an oxymoron.

BC Liberals introduced Canada’s first carbon tax, which was revenue neutral. The BC NDP terminated revenue neutrality.

Yup. This is an electioneering move. Thankfully, I fully believe that the Liberals are too far gone to recover enough to prevent a Conservative majority next election.

From your words to the voters minds.

Unfortunately, I don't think the same will happen in BC, which I dare say we need even more.

Agreed. A tragically large portion of BC voters are idiots.

Has anybody ever seen restaurant patrons bring their own wine - or take the bottle home?

I think we’ve been allowed for over a decade, but I’ve never seen anyone do either.

Yeah, I've seen wine capped a couple of times.

Hard not to notice someone leaving a restaurant with a big bottle in their hand.  :rtfm:

Dozens of times, pretty much every week, pay the corkage fee and drink what you want.

corkage fees seem pretty high compared to what they used to be. Would you pay 30 bucks just for that?

Needs to be high enough to deter people from bringing a …. $20-30 dollar bottle in.

Used to see bottles going home on the regular back in the old days but these days it also seems there is a prevalence of larger pours on menus. A six oz pour isn’t enough, 2 of them and you don’t want to risk driving so more and more 9oz pours on the menu. Ups the average guest check by a few bucks.

Wine by the glass is usually cheaper for the restaurant than wine by the bottle as well.

I wouldn't, but I know lots that do.
