Can't help but think of Ender Ilkay's Juan de Fuca cabins development that has been mired in controversy. This might fare better given it's not directly adjacent a regional park, but who knows what the environmentalists will protest.

I am trying to figure out where this development is supposed to be. I am having trouble figuring out which five parcels with 436 acres it is meant to be.

As far as I can tell this would a property that would be the same size as all of downtown Port Renfrew

Is that not an already existing development that they are referencing as an example of what they would do?

The property is large enough to be the one, though the five properties are all non-waterfront.

Currently the land is zoned specifically not to be used for tourism type accommodation.

A few years ago I heard of a planned resort that was to be in the hills up in behind the marina across the river. Perhaps this is it?

My understanding is that it is wild coast cottages. They just want to build larger. I might have heard wrong but the person who told me is reliable.

But why would hoards of people want to move way the heck out there? Those cottages are a ways beyond Port Renfrew and offer no views of the ocean.

IMHO, this is another syndication scheme that promises to pay annualized returns (their website says 9%) much like the IGW REIT once promised 14%. It seemed like a great idea 5 years ago, but not so much anymore.

It would be nice to see this initiative really take flight; we fish that area regularly (San Juan River) and had a great conversation with Pacheedaht Chief Jeff Jones literally standing beside each other one day on the river about a year ago. He was very proud of the fact the band had just opened up a new gas bar/station/general store. A small start to be sure but an encouraging one that also offered up some badly needed employment for younger band members.

 

The area has a lot of potential but does need improved infrastructure and services - basic things like a good grocery store and outdoor supplies center for starters especially if they expect to become an ecotourism center.

 

The FN also needs to upgrade the campground which they control and run. There are lots of non-fishing activities to engage in at plenty of lovely spots including the river estuary, Fairey Lake, Lizard Lake etc. The west coast road to PR has been somewhat improved and outright upgraded in some sections but could still stand some work.

 

Very recently (June/July) the Ditidaht (Nitinaht) and Pacheedaht First Nations signed an agreement in principle in the BC Treaty Process; this was significant inasmuch as this was a very long process, encompassing over 23 years in negotiations for the Pacheedaht and 25+ years for the Ditidaht. The joint AIP sets out the elements that will be included in separate treaty agreements with the two groups. 

 

These elements include ownership and cooperative management of land and resources, self-government and jurisdiction over a range of subject matters, harvesting rights, cultural and heritage protection, economic development opportunities and capital transfer. The treaty will also include lands from the Pacific National Park Reserve in the West Coast Trail and Nitinaht Lake area and adjacent to the Pacheedaht community, subject to further negotiations. 

 

The town council IMO needs to cultivate and work hand in glove with the FN because with the demise of sport fishing for the foreseeable future, their destinies are closely intertwined. Good luck to them....
