One of downtown Victoria's oldest retail stores, Paboom Home Imports (600-block of Fort Street), is running a sale to move stock in preparation for a potential move.

I had a chance to speak with the owner and she said that the end of the lease at the current location has given her the opportunity to scout a new location for the store elsewhere in downtown.

We spoke of emerging retail areas of downtown, like the area around Hudson or within the building itself, and various lease promotions landlords are offering (or not offering). Long story short, the owner commented on how operating a business downtown is becoming a costlier proposition every year and despite rising vacancies landlords are not particularly keen to make concessions on leases.

Anyhow, Paboom's entire inventory is discounted by at least 25% so now is a great time to go if you're looking for a unique knick knack or decor for your home.

Most people would have a new lease signed before their current lease ran out and they started selling off inventory.

Sounds like it might be the end of the line.

I've bought some pretty crappy tat there in the past. The best was an ice cream scooper that turned a funny black colour after a one time use.

Signing a lease takes a day and there are plenty of landlords eager to sign away.

There's no reason to think this is a closing out sale and Paboom is about to go kaboom.

Signing a lease takes a day. Moving phones, internet, inventory, equipment, etc takes considerably longer.

You're saying Paboom is closing out which is far too premature of an assertion.

A small business closing one location to prep a new location (2-3 months isn't out of the ordinary) is standard practice. I don't feel there is anything amiss here and we shouldn't start assuming otherwise just based on the owner weighing her options on potential storefronts.

All I am suggesting is that it wouldn't suprise me. I don't know the owner and have no basis to make an assertion either way. Just find it strange.

Muffet Louisa is closing and Paboom is moving in. Doesn't this fly in the face of Anthem's multi-year attempt to close deals with chains and "upper end" retailers? Recall that Dig This and several other retailers were unable to renew their leases.

Paboom is awesome. Have bought many things there over the years. That said I will kind of miss that being on Fort Street. A stop at Paboom and the Papery was often part of a Saturday afternoon walk.

Is the sale still on?

I will miss this store. I liked the interesting items at reasonable prices. Referring to it as "one of Victoria's oldest retail outlets" is a bit of a stretch, though, since it didn't open until the 1990's.
