I think it's a bit sad for such a historic marker. Consider that of all the photo-ops in this city (the harbour, The Empress, the legislature, the blue bridge) it has to be up near the top-10.

OK, I spent 15 minutes this morning doing Google image searches for both "Victoria BC" and "Victoria Canada". The results were near identical. Now, this is an unscientific survey, and probably weighs professional websites more so than random tourist pictures, but I went through hundreds of images and came up with this ranking:

#1 Legislature
#2 Empress Hotel

These two were very close, probably within 10%, and they were also the runaway winners, each had more than double the next most popular two:

#3 Inner Harbour (where neither Empress or Legislature were the clear target)
#4 Butchart Gardens

Then it really leveled off, and all these are within 5% of one another:

Ogden Point
Dallas Rd.
Beacon Hill Park
Water in general, including whales
Gorge
Craigdarroch
Mile 0
Museum
General aerial views
Blue Bridge

I would have thought that chinatown would have been in the mix.

Macleans writer, Mark Richardson, has started to drive and document the 8,000km from St. John's to Victoria. http://www2.macleans...etres-1-driver/

A friend of mine was telling me yesterday about her little sister's end-of-year outdoor party for some grads. When she asked her where they were going, she told her "Mylo Beach".

My friend had never heard of it, and asked where it was. Her sister said "I don't know, it's near the petting farm."

"Beacon Hill Park?"

"Ya, Mylo Beach right at the end of Douglas St".

Turns out her sister didn't know it was Mile Zero (beach). The reference to the start of the TCH was lost on her.

So what we need is a design competition, right?

And then the project should be made a volunteer effort by the community for low or no cost to the taxpayers.

I'll suggest a nice big boulder from the beach off the other Mile Zero be used as the new marker, with suitable info carved into it.

There should be at least a gazebo like strucure with a weather and vandal proof map of Canada, illustrated with the borders and regions etc. of the year the highway was completed.  Could be in CPR Gothic or in something more contemporary, just needs to be relatively vandal and weatherproof, and of course, designed to make the photos easy and attractive for the visitors.

There needs to be a better lay-by for buses and perhaps some angle spaces for visitor cars?

An all weather path up to the monument/marker should be included as well.  People go there at all seasons.

Anyone else?

"just needs to be relatively vandal and weatherproof, and of course,"

Interesting, in Lucerne Switzerland there are two wooden covered bridges over the river at the end of Lucerne Lake right in the middle of the city.

On the cross members of the roof supports there are many paintings by artists dating back centuries. They have no protection over them at all, they are simply mounted as they came. When we inquired why they were not protected the answer we got was "no need, nobody would damage valuable art"

Ahh, civilization.

Would the Tinto Rocks be suitable?  Where are they now?

LJ:

More disappointing is the large amount of graffiti which has irreparably damaged the grandeur of this important monument

from TripAdvisor.com

Also, the Lion of Lucerne was vandalized with paint not too long ago.

^I didn't notice any graffiti at all, there were some initials and names carved into the bridge but when you see they were put there a couple of hundred years ago they are more history than graffiti.

The Lion of Lucerne is in a bad neighbourhood with nothing else around per se so I guess it makes a more inviting target for a nut job.

So anyone interested in actually doing something about the Mile Zero monument?
