Lately, there's been a guy around downtown dropping off Scientology questionnaires at our work. We've been having a lot of fun answering their lengthy moronic quiz amongst ourselves. Of course, any combination of answers results in a recommendation to get yourself hooked up to a fake mind-reading device and then spend vast quantities of money on their life improvement "courses".

Don't. Just don't.

The CoS is a bunch of extremely motivated, highly organized, and moderately intelligent people who are perfectly versed in conning rather bright people out of their money, time, and self-esteem. They've been working at it for decades. Plus, they have a habit of destroying the lives of people who out how the pyramid scheme works - up to and including assasination. That should suggest to you how much money is involved. Do not underestimate their ability decieve you, and don't give them any wedge into your life.

Ok, good advice I suppose. But how do you know I don't want to become one of them? I could really fit in with the Scientologists! I could really get into it and help them take the organization to new plateaus!

Far be it from me to talk down to anyone else's beliefs since my own are, by definition, esoteric given the 100+ year freemasonic association of my family, but I recently had quite a lively conversation with someone who claimed to be both a CoS and a mason.

Of course within < 30 seconds I determined he certainly was not a member of nor had any knowledge remotely connected to or of the Craft, but he really lost me with the claim the CoS was somehow a direct offshoot of the masons and moreover was part of the 'controlling hierarchy' which secretly runs World Freemasonry. Right. And I am actually Donald Duck in disguise. Well not really but as a 32nd degree mason with more than a few contacts throughout the masonic order here and abroad I can certainly say CoS (thankfully) does its own thing completely separate and apart from masonic activities. By any definition of the term CoS is a cult, pure and simple.

^This is oddly connected. We were just in San Antonio for a visit and of course went to the Alamo. I never knew that Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett were both masons. (and one other Alamo guy whose name escapes me)

It seems reasonable that L. Ron Hubbard cherry picked some ideas about structuring a hierarchy from the Masons but I've never heard anything resembling a link between the two organizations. Scientology is fascinating subject. There are a lot of great articles out there on it that make for fascinating reading.

Correct, there is no such link. Although other bodies such as the OTO, beginning in the early 20th century in the case of that entity, certainly have attempted to base certain aspects of their organization's using the masonic model, particularly with respect to their degree structure, there is no such cross pollination of ideals or philosophies with the CoS. Certain of their beliefs - the concept of disconnection in that link you provided for example HW - are utterly antithetical and diametrically in opposition to Freemasonic thought.
