Remarkable comeback from Down 3-0 to take series one 4-3.

probably no chance of this season going forward.

this league may simply lose many teams before they restart.

Not Grizzlies related, but another local junior team is changing its name.

🏒Saanich Junior Braves Announce Plans to Change Team Name🏒

Owners of the Saanich Junior Braves have announced plans to rename their hockey team.

“The Saanich Junior Braves name is not respectful to our First Nations and does not reflect the valued relationships we hold with local First Nations communities or with our First Nations players. We have decided to rename the team and have started a process to develop a name that upholds our core values. Community, excellence and equality are central to everything we do as a hockey team and we commit to our players, families, fans and the whole community to use the changing of our name as an opportunity to contribute to and amplify positive dialogue about race and equality in Canada,” said Edward Geric and Norm Kelly, team owners.

The longstanding Saanich Junior Braves name and logo have been in use since 1967, when the team first joined the Vancouver Island Junior League. More information about the renaming process will be announced in the coming weeks.

Kelly said he has consulted several times previously with Island First Nations leaders about the name and none he talked to were against its use.

“But times are very different now. We decided we needed to be sensitive and we needed to be the change we want to see. We decided to be leaders, not followers,” Kelly said.

“The Braves name is not respectful to our First Nations and does not reflect the valued relationships we hold with local First Nations communities or with our First Nations players. The changing of our name [is] an opportunity to contribute to and amplify positive dialogue about race and equality in Canada.”

There has been some pushback, Kelly said. “We’ve already received some negative commentary regarding our move to change the name,” he said.

That could be because the term Braves is considered less egregious than some First Nations names — Redskins being the most flagrant — and is in popular culture thought to mean young warriors generally in the way Vikings is used as a team name denoting Norse warriors.

“It’s been an interesting process because there are so many different opinions regarding the term [Braves],” said Kelly, a retired emergency-room nurse.

“Several First Nations people told me there is no such term as Braves in their cultures and that the term is completely fictitious.”

Gordon Planes, chief of the T’Sou-ke Nation in Sooke, said he has no issue with the name Braves. “Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad name. It is somewhat stereotypical, but I don’t see anything wrong with it,” said Planes, who coached his sons in baseball when they were younger.

The term Braves is about as offensive to First Nations as the term Cougars is offensive to women.

Saanich Junior B Hockey Announces New Team Name - The Saanich Predators

September 22, 2020, Victoria, BC - The Saanich Junior B Hockey team has chosen a new team name, The Saanich Predators. The team dropped their long standing name, The Saanich Braves, in early July out of respect for First Nations. Since that time, they have been working on a new name and have had significant input from the public. Feedback on their shortlist, announced in August, saw three names quickly rise to the top of the list, the Saanich Squid, Saanich Defenders and Saanich Predators.

“Our final decision to choose the Saanich Predators was made mainly because of the feedback we received from the local hockey community and our players,” said Edward Geric and Norm Kelly, team owners. “We also have very fond memories from our days of managing the Victoria Predators prior to this team. It reminds us of the many years of developing talented players and community connections around this fantastic sport. We’re so thankful to everyone that has taken the time to share their ideas and their support for this name change.”

Geric and Kelly have a new logo and branding design underway and plan to share it with the public very soon. Their focus for the new branding is to demonstrate that the Saanich Predators play with honour, using stealth, strength and teamwork to thrive against their opponents. It will also connect to the community and represent the work that’s done to build character and community through the team’s charitable and volunteer initiatives.

The Saanich Predators are part of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL). They are excited to return to play under their new banner when the league makes its official return. An announcement about the 2020/2021 season is expected in the coming weeks.

I question the judgment  of choosing "Predators" as a new name.  That word has taken on a very negative meaning in popular culture over the past years....

Alberni Valley Bulldogs remove broadcaster midway through game for racist comment about player

The veteran colour commentator has apologized for his words, saying: “Racism has no place in hockey or anywhere else in this world. I’m truly sorry.”

That’s a 21-paragraph story that does not tell us what was said.

Here is the issue:

Rivermen Communications and Digital Media Coordinator Mac Guardiero posted video, with audio of the clip, on Twitter, where after a confrontation between Kim and a Bulldogs’ player, MacDonald could be heard saying “does he speak English? Maybe that’s the problem.”
