I chatted with a contact and it sounds like the whole Island was affected by yesterday’s outage.

Know it all.

^Well, there was no office-wide memo if that's what you were thinking. It was more about middle-management running around telling people to keep it all on the down low. They may have been over-reacting, for all I know upper management might not have cared who knew.

Well, I've also received no such verbal communication from my supervisors nor from our department director about keeping things on the down low, and I've had informal conversations with all of them on this network outage. To be honest, the topic of info sharing and the public never even came up.

Just curious, where are you getting your info from Rob? I suppose it's possible that some other departments are talking in the terms you mentioned but I've not come across that attitude yet.

And yes, Mike, all of Island Health's sites were affected in some capacity.

My source works in the trenches. I have no corroboration so can't say for sure the details or extent of how this was managed. Talk to the janitors, porters, junior technicians, not middle-managers.

Hmmm, fair enough.

I AM one of those technologists and I also work on the technical side of things. I move all over the hospital and get a chance to talk with all manner of people, from the equipment depot porters, to nurses, to supervisors, and to some of the IT guys themselves. I've spoken with some of my technologist co-workers and they've also not heard of this communication, formally or informally, about keeping the details of the network outage on the down-low.

Will keep my ears open though. It's certainly not out of the question that an area/department might have taken that attitude with regard to the event but, at the very least, it's not an official VIHA wide stance and there is no VIHA wide co-ordinated effort to hide anything from the public or the media.
