The (former) Shell Station on Cook and Fairfield is cordened off and is surrounded by half a dozen fire trucks. You cannot pass through Fairfield Rd.
That's all I know.

Turns out it's a gas leak at the apartment being remediated next door to the gas station.

^Like the one about the two frantic men meeting in mid-air: man plummetting downward: "Do you know anything about parachutes?!" Man flying upward: "No, do you know anything about gas barbecues?!"
"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

Wait until they have the proposed sewer sludge pipe running through neighbourhoods to Hartland dump. The saying "call before you dig" will take on a new life.

^ Good point. That pipe from Hartland to the outfall has some serious leachates running through it.

Google that and be afraid.

Ah I saw some senior fire officials doing some sort of inspection or walk-around of the apartments/condos near the gas station yesterday, wondered what that was about.

We have had multiple reports of a fire at the Hartland Landfill. Cfax1070 is reporting Saanich Fire Dept have an engine and a tanker on it and have kept it confined to the face. SFD is awaiting an excavator to assist with extinguishing the blaze.

It's not the pit they dump the road kill into, is it? :o

As forest fires rage across the province, a group of scientists is working on a model that could predict wildfires up to two weeks before they happen.

Steve Taylor, a research scientist at the Pacific Forestry Centre in Saanich, said the goal is to cut response times by giving emergency planners more notice. “We won’t be able to say specifically where they will occur, but these episodes where we have a lot of large fire starts — they don’t really come out of nowhere,” Taylor said.

^ The science seems pretty sound.  They are not going to predict a fire within a 100 metre radius, but they will look at general trends and then be able to move resources around the country.  Now, unless we create a national fire-fighting service, it might not help much.

Just let Hartland burn. Should extend the life of that dump a few years, no?

There’s a large brush fire burning near Lake Cowichan.

The fire just broke out just before 5pm Tuesday and it’s burning on Highway 18 near the Skutz Falls turnoff.
