Jeez. how often is there a fire there? Conditions right now are so tinder dry, feels like the whole park could go up from one careless cigarette or a lightning strike.

Grass fire at edge of bicycle lane by totem pole
Probably a tossed cigarette by a careless smoking bicyclist

Heritage House at 902 Foul Bay was heavily damaged by fire last night... House has some interesting history... Last I heard it was overrun with cats.

Boarded up houses around here always amaze me. WTH would you have a boarded-up house for? How much is the property alone worth? You can always borrow against the value to do your renovations or what have you.

I think that whoever bought that house plans or hopes to divide it into multiple units. Apparently the stench of cat urine was overwhelming.

I suppose tearing it down prematurely is not wise, if it is legal non-conforming too.

I've always wondered about that house. I live only a few blocks away. So what is the interesting history?

ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:
David was born in Brantford, ON, to school teacher Leonard Tait and his wife Agnes. They came to BC in 1889-90. The 1901 Census shows them living on Craigflower Rd, and Leonard was principal of Esquimalt High School. David was living at home and a school teacher, but he was admitted to the bar in 1908. By 1911, David was head of the legal firm, Tait, Brandon & Hall, later Tait & Marchant (1417 Pembroke St, Fernwood). His brother Ernest L. Tait was also a lawyer, with Heisterman & Tait. In the 1930s David formed a mining syndicate which became the Privateer Mine, and was president until 1950. David and Emily lived at 1226 Roslyn Rd in Oak Bay during the 1920s and 30s and later moved to Vancouver.

As a child I had started a small grass fire accidentally while playing with firecrackers, only realized what had happened while watching the news, they interviewed the nearest homeowner he said he saw two kids running away after hearing the noise of firecrackers, then they flip to the fire department they said their investigation had concluded spontaneous combustion as a result of the nearby compost pile.
Trying to charge kids is a waste of time, so they were just trying to save some paperwork and go for a beer.

I learned my lesson. It just removed some invasive species mostly Scotch Broom today the area is much better off, I guess I could present the city a bill for invasive species removal.

So many lessons to be learned from this incident.
1) Don't smoke
2) If (1) is unavoidable, smoke and discard your cigarette butts safely
3) Many people assume that smoke will wake them up - this isn't true: https://vanwinkles.c...-you-from-sleep
4) Make sure your smoke alarms work and are equipped with fresh batteries. Test monthly.

The developer is having a neighbourhood meeting today to discuss their plans for the house. But I don't remember the details of when and where since I knew I couldn't attend. There was a note (very unofficial looking) left on the the main door of our house, where no one lives, so I don't think many of the other tenants saw it.

The developer is Earl Large, correct? I checked his company website for info about a meeting but don't see anything posted.
