Pretty much everyone in my office has a Master's degree. Not a one has MA, MPA or whatever in their email signature block. You know why? Because it's douchy and it's the height of insecurity. "Look at me, look at me, I'm a professional! Love me, validate me!"

Kind of like putting an ® after REALTOR.

I think unlike engineers, pharmacists, etc.. "Realtor" isn't the actual job title but rather the trade name of the association they belong to.

On the CREA website, they're pretty clear that not every licenced real estate agent or broker is a "Realtor".

(Insert R's in circles where appropriate or required by law :P)

Realtors are almost certainly required to refer to themselves as REALTOR® in writing. It's not a choice like putting your degrees after your name (pointless, I agree).

What a nonsensical discussion. The term Realtor was coined to differentiate a group of professionals from other property-selling riff raff. They adhere to a set of ethical guidelines so I'm assured my Realtor isn't double dealing behind my back; if they're caught, they're punished and publicly shamed. The ® must be used by them to protect the term, otherwise it's considered public domain like aspirin or corn flakes and then any Glengarry Glen Ross reject can call himself one.

Sold a house once for a friend. Took a ad in the newspaper, me taking some pics and making a tri-fold brochure (50 copies costing less then 20.00, full colour), a cleaner the day b4, (4 hours x 20.00an hour). Third person walked in offered full price, with no contingency. Then all it took was the real estate lawyers to draw up and approve the contracts on the sellers and buyers side. Was not that hard at all.

Anyone else here suspect the house was undervalued?

Actually was not undervalued. Got 40K more then a condo that sold in the building about 4 months before.

So then "meat cutter" should be as well! (agreeing with you, as meat cutters are considered a trade name)

And when was that? The market ain't what it used to be.

The point behind the comment has nothing to do with when, but how... and what all it takes. So what if the markets bad and I might of had to do a few more open houses b4 it sold. The buyer preferred not having to deal with a real estate agent, and I know lots of people that do.

I have to agree with the comment its all about how much work your want to do to save money.

Yeah my brother sold his place without a realtor and without MLS. Just made an infosheet and emailed it to all the realtors in the area, offering full buyers agent commission if they brought a buyer. Sold in a couple weeks.

This was before listing-only contracts on MLS existed. I think now it would make sense to spend the $500 to get on MLS just for the exposure. In the end the biggest determinant is the price. Price it right and it will sell fast.

Very little information out there about effectiveness of realtors. The only stats out there show that realtors consistently sell their own places faster or at a higher price than those of their clients :)
