Why is it that no air quality comparisons are ever available to back up any of these claims?

It's like the speed limit debate - 'if we lower the limit to 40 we can cut down on pollution' said all the activists speaking in favor at the public hearings.

Then why has my fuel economy gone down the drain?  At last check, I'm now sucking back a hair under 15L of 91 oct fuel per 100km of city driving.  Engineered gridlock isn't helping with emissions.

^ "Engineered gridlock" is exactly what is being done as slowing you down to a crawl is better for bikes, and the CoV believes that can force you out of your car.

She believes everyone will soon be car less.  Seriously.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said, “the entry of Zipcar into the Victoria market sends a really important signal … that car-sharing is working. It has been working for many years. It also sends a message that Victorians are fully immersed in 21st-century living where we don’t need to own everything. We can share.”

She is now doing commercials for Modo as part of that agenda;

If people don't need to own things why doesn't she voluntarily reduce her own salary? And her new chief of staff's? Why did Elsner need to get such a hefty payout?

What percentage of vehicle trips are done in car share cars?

I would assume that percentage would be lower than that of bicycle trips.

We know someone who lives on a stretch of Vancouver that, when I study the map, seems to be blocked off to cars entirely. She is not one bit happy. And there's a reason we rarely use Cook or Quadra, they don't go where we want to go, whereas Vancouver St. does.

no area will be blocked to cars entirely.  all of vancouver will still have cars on it.  people pay extra money to live on limited traffic streets like cul-de-sacs.  for most residents on vancouver this will be a positive change. change is hard alas sometimes for some.

It's going to be a total ****-up on Vancouver Street, diverting far too many cars onto already congested Cook and Quadra and forcing more traffic onto the currently quieter side streets.

And where exactly do you want to go? Those three streets are parallel to each other and one can easily take Cook or Quadra, then turn off one block if you need to get to Vancouver. And like VW said, there is nowhere on Vancouver that will be entirely blocked off to cars.

i mean who in their right mind is currently using vancouver from beacon hill park to hillside now?

Not entirely blocked off... But will there be an impact to response times for emergency vehicles?

yes but it'll be insignificant. if that was a significant issue we'd have 12 fire halls instead of 3.

Considering there's apparently not enough money to fix one of the current ones not sure where the money for those 9 new ones is coming from

i also might be generally in favour of closing parts of vancouver street.  there is no need for redundant through streets in lots of parts of town.  like scott street (use shelbourne).  or haultain (use bay).  i could even block parts of richmond (use shelbourne or foul bay).

I couldn't disagree more.  Through streets should be just that - through streets - and designed and maintained as such.

Put another way, having more route options to get from A to B is always better than having less.

As long as you are not the one having the heart attack! Bear in mind that the proposed location for firehall #1 is outside of the core service area. A little extra time here and a little extra time there will add up to a life at some point.

If the CoV doesn't start allocating more resources to maintain existing transportation infrastructure there soon won't be any through streets left. I just got back from a friend's place in Oaklands and in the short distance between there and here we had to swerve to avoid at least 4 potholes large enough that hitting them could have caused actual damage to our vehicle. Of course this is all probably part of the city's plan to get more people out of their cars. It's entirely shameful.

I can assure you that riding a bike around (hopefully) those potholes is not pleasant either and could have much more serious outcomes than vehicular damage. So what are we left with? waiting for flying cars?

Spend tax dollars wisely. Maintain the infrastructure that has the greatest impact for the greatest number of users.

Forget the bike or car and buy an extra large SUV. Then you'll be able to drive over the potholes and the traffic calming devices.

Big SUVs have huge wheels and low profile tires that potholes will eat for lunch.
