that’s just a mayors recommendation. could still be decades before any work starts.

The most depressing thing in the report on different options is that the status quo isn’t completely ruled out. Although it acknowledges pressing needs, there’s an observation that, with proper maintenance, the Massey Tunnel will last for another 50 years.

A mayors’ task force picked an eight-lane tunnel Wednesday as their choice. That aligns politically, as at least the NDP now has something completely different to show for the two-year delay. Whether it makes sense technically is still to be argued out.

But even with that small advance, the decision is far from made. It has to go to another committee, then the full regional board, then back to the government. A final decision could be expected late next year, which would put an expected completion date in 2025-26.

Northbound morning commuters on the Alex Fraser Bridge will have four lanes to choose from next week with the introduction of a moveable barrier system using a zipper truck.

The $70 million provincial and federal government project has resulted in six lanes being turned into seven slimmer ones. Since September, four lanes have been dedicated southbound. Next week, the zipper truck will start moving the barrier system each day to create four northbound lanes between 4:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

The redesign of the Granville Street Bridge is veering in a new direction after Vancouver residents made it clear to city hall what they want for the crossing’s future.

On Monday, the City of Vancouver unveiled results of a public consultation process conducted in September that garnered almost 8,000 responses after residents were presented with six options for how to reallocate two of the Granville Bridge’s traffic lanes to create pathways for travelling by foot, bike and wheelchair. It turned out the option senior city staff had publicly endorsed, an elevated pedestrian/bicycle path in the bridge’s middle two lanes, was not a hit with the public.

Christy Clark announces 10-year-plan to replace George Massey Tunnel

Read more: Christy Clark announces 10-year-plan to replace George Massey Tunnel

Does anyone know why a tunnel makes more sense than a bridge, anyway? Wikipedia says it's only 22m deep at its lowest point.

An eight-lane tunnel under the Fraser River will replace an obsolete crossing that has frustrated Metro Vancouver drivers for decades.

The B.C. government announced the new tunnel connecting the cities of Delta and Richmond on Highway 99 will cost $4.15 billion, with an estimated completion date of 2030.

Construction of the replacement for the George Massey Tunnel is set to start in 2025,Transportation Minister Rob Fleming told a news conference Wednesday.

The new tunnel will improve traffic flow, save travel time and make travel easier for those taking transit, cycling or walking, he said, adding it will not be tolled.

$4.15 billion?   i'm no engineer but wouldn't it just be cheaper to move the river?  i've taken the liberty of constructing a detailed design diagram (no charge):

The river accommodates container ships so it would be quite the feat.

i'm willing to throw my hat in the ring for $3.5 billion.

the problem we have here is that great care will be taken to make sure everything remains the same.  rather than placing high value on how much BETTER we can make the area.  And at the same time get some return on this huge investment.

every man woman and child in the province will contribute $1000 to this thing.   surely we can get some return somehow.

Now if only the NDP had not scrapped the Liberal’s plan, only to eventually announce the same plan, construction would have already been underway.

So $7b and 2033 then.

But.. but.. decarbonization!

I bet the Ben and Lisa show writes a letter demanding bike lanes.

There's going to be a dedicated pedestrian and cycling tunnel - I'm actually most excited about that as it makes bike touring far easier from Swartz Bay.

Totally. For me it's two very manageable rides to my buddy's place on West Hastings with a ferry lunch inbetween.

I’m on edge in a giant cage of a vehicle on those highways and you cycle them? Hats off to you, genuinely.

Very little time spent on the highway, Lochside Trail most of the way to the ferry and then on the other side Shell Rd to Cambie.

Rode from North Van to Tsawwassen a couple weeks back. The only time spent on the shoulder of the highway was from the south end of Tsawwassen Mills to the ferry terminal. Everything else was on neighbourhood roads, or arterials with proper bike lanes.

Without a car to sit in on the ferry, how do you hide from all the other people?
