Housing reform advocacy groups representing Victoria and communities across B.C. are calling on the province to take greater action to fight the housing crisis.

Victoria housing advocacy group Homes for Living YYJ – a mix of homeowners and renters, including policy analysts, mapping/zoning specialists and students – is among the eight signatories. The group advocates for more homes through policy reform to make Greater Victoria more affordable for people across the income and housing needs spectrum.

“There are still far too many barriers to building housing,” director Sam Holland said in a news release. "Exclusionary zoning, high fees, and lengthy permitting timelines are keeping new homes scarce and rents and prices high."

While the province has made significant progress permitting new apartment buildings near transit as well as small-scale housing in local neighbourhoods, more work is needed to expand the supply of apartments, multiplexes, and townhouses in major cities.

So in London average rent for a one bedroom is &2200 which is over $4000. So I think Canada's housing crisis is way overblown. There are lots of place you can rent for $2500 or less a month, the only crisis we have is people don't want to pay that price.

So the answer in the UK is applying for a council flat where the rent is about &140 a week or about $1200 monthly. However you have to apply for it, there are waiting lists, you can be black balled, single people are the bottom of the list, it's means tested and many other requirements/conditions.

My SIL has had enough of London and recently moved to Manchester where things aren’t as insane, in terms of the pace of life and the cost of living. She’ll be here in a week, so I’ll get the full scoop. Her guy is in finance, based in Manchester. He’s got some good stories on the spending habits of British high society.

It’s the taxes, the tenancy regulation changes and the taxes. It’s not low immigration. Although foreign capital falls under taxes, and then there’s the ban.

The NDP have killed the condo market. Even if interest rates fall, the property taxes, purchase taxes, holding taxes, flipping taxes, rental taxes and provincial building code changes leading to higher costs, are what’s doing in the industry. Add to that the still dragged out permitting process and it’s no better today to build condos than before the government tried to fix an industry that by comparison was doing well.

Manchester is pretty sad compared to London though.  In terms of things to do.
