Absolutely no sympathy for a "business" that has a Go Fund Me. You are either a business or you are not. They seem to operate as a public institution.
Agreed. They seem to have had multiple public sympathy campaigns for donations etc.

In 2022, Buckerfield's joined the Stonemark group of companies, a BC-based family business with deep roots in the BC agriculture community. With this, Buckerfield's enduring legacy as BC's original country store is secured for future generations to come - the place where folks come together to find what they need to nourish their animals and nurture the land they love.
So they are now owned by private equity?

CA paid the rents they were paying when we purchased the property. The rent did not go up or change in any way as a result of the Purchase.
Not suggesting that you were unreasonable in rents, just that there is a difference when you are paying yourself (or family) rent vs someone else.

What did you expect him to say?

Maybe that he was retiring, or that they exhausted possibilities of selling the store.

They sold the land which I am sure is an order of magnitude more than they ever would have got selling the store. Like everything, I am sure there is more to the story than what is made public but in any event it was a great ride and they did a lot for the community. Sad to see them go.

We would have loved them to stay but they exercised their Lease Cancellation Option that they negotiated into the land sale. Now we will turn our minds to a new life for that building.

Upon council approval, the company’s first focus will be redeveloping the parking lot in front of the Capital Iron building. Without Capital Iron being housed across the street, Stovell said they will no longer have to worry about replacing that parking during construction, as was their agreement with the business; an underground parkade is planned for that same spot but would not be accessible until after construction is finished.
Reliance is proposing to work with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on a new gallery in that lot, as well as live-work space for artists, a new industrial office building, and a plaza. Across the entire seven-acres, Stovell says Reliance would like to see a mix of light industrial, high tech, retail, and arts and culture uses.

Seems to me that both the Jawls and Reliance are counting on a pretty big supply of taxpayer funded infrastructure money (ie library, art gallery, ocean hub, YMCA, etc) with these projects.

Does YMCA get much taxpayer money?
